The regulations are not intended to aid the small teams. They are intended to level the playingfield despite the wide variety of engine types and sizes present. If it wasn't for restrictors and weight 'penalties' the tight battle between the Corvettes and DBR9s at Le Mans would not have been possible.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

ACO rules don't play with weight though AFAIK, recently they started playing with rear wing sizes as well to equalize greenhouse size and its effect.....

Yeah I am not sure about the weight either.

The comment for small temas was because I woudl expect large teams to design and eingeer a solution srather than "plan" to take advantage of regulations

But that was a FALSE BATTLE>
Both teams were running all their cars below their peak perrformance to avoid penalties in the equivalancy formulas for this year. The fans in the stands weren't impressed !!

    Equivalency destroys motorsport (IMHO).
Different classes is a better way of being "fairer" to smaller cars, turbo'ed cars, AWD cars etc etc. ( like in rallying )

Dyson Racing picked up the pace as its two Lola B06/10-AERs posted the second- and fourth-fastest times during a one-hour practice session Wednesday afternoon for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the opening of the 2006 American Le Mans Series. Audi Sport North America held the top spot again, however, as its diesel-powered R10 TDI prototype was the quickest of all 30 cars that took part in the session.

Frank Biela posted a fast lap of 1:48.598 in the No. 1 Audi R10 TDI, the fifth straight session that one of the new Audis has turned the best time. A half-second back was Dyson Racing's No. 16 Lola, driven by James Weaver. It was the best showing of the week for the Dyson team, which also is debuting its new LMP1s.

For the first time this week, Intersport Racing posted the quickest time among LMP2 entries. The team's Lola B05/40-AER, with Clint Field at the wheel, toured the 17-turn track in 1:49.732, besting Penske Racing's No. 7 Porsche RS Spyder by 1.5 seconds.

Corvette Racing's two Corvette C6.Rs were 1-2 in GT1, with the No. 3 car of Max Papis leading the way with a 1:56.636. Papis was 0.127 seconds better than the No. 4 car, and less than a second better than Aston Martin Racing's two DBR9s.

In GT2, Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz' No. 50 Panoz Esperante GTLM set the fast time of the day. Champ Car star Sebastien Bourdais piloted the Panoz to a 2:03.299 lap, less than a half second ahead of the team's No. 51 car. The No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 430 GT was third at 2:04.166.

The American Le Mans Series begins its 2006 season with the 54th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The 12-hour endurance classic is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EST on Saturday at Sebring International Raceway. It will be televised live on SPEED Channel in North America and MotorsTV in Europe. In addition, Greenlight-Television will distribute the race worldwide to more than 510 million households. American Le Mans Radio will have flag-to-flag coverage available at www.americanlemans.com, along with IMSA Live Timing & Scoring.

They've played with weight before. They added a weight penalty to all the Audi R8's last year and to the Rollcentre Dallara's

Since the Pirelli's take longer than the Michelin's to warm up and the Astons get better fuel economy than the Corvettes, the Astons can keep out of the pits longer
