    Test of applied creativity

I found this paper with these brain teasing questions somewhere in my binder today, I guess I'll see if you guys can get the right answers.

    1. If an individual went to bed at 8 o'clock P.M. and set the alarm to get up at 9:00 in the morning, how many hours of sleep would he get?

    2. Do they have a 4th of July in England? Explain.

    3. How many birthdays does the average man have?

    4. Can a man living in Winston Salem, North Carolina be buried West of the Mississippi River?

    5. If you had a match and entered a room in which there were a kerosene lamp, an oil heater and a wood burning stove, which item would you light first?

    6. Some months have 30 days, some 31, but how many have 28?

    7. If your doctor gave you 3 pills and said to take one every half hour, how long would they last?

    8. A house is built so that each side has a southern exposure. If a bear should wander by the house, what would the color of the bear most likely be?

    5. No one, if it is a usual safety match
    6. Three in four years, I would say
    7. One hour
    8. Impossible house

Depends if he wakes up before the alarm goes off, or if he turns it off and goes back to sleep.

    Lazy git.

It's right there between the 3rd and the 5th of July.

It kind of looses the flow if you miss it out.

More than one, since the moment you are actually born is never commonly referred to as your "birthday". Common usage dictates that "birthday" refers to the annual celebration of your birth.

Pregnant mother never says; "Oh, my waters' have broken, let's go to the hospital for our average baby's birthday!"

If he goes far enough west of the Mississippi, he can be buried to the east of it if he likes.

    The bulb?

This isn't the Middle Ages, so it is reasonable to expect "a room" to have electricity and a light installed.

Of course if you only went in the room to pick up your keys, you're unlikely to light any of them.

Depends if you are using a Gregorian calender or not.

Depends how closely you choose to follow his instructions.

You might decide to take them all at once, or once every 28 minutes, or take the first two and decide to keep the third as a momento of that time you took some pills...

Red, from all the blood, which has come from the idiot who built a house next to some bears, with no plumbing.

Only answer using given info, don't explain unless noted.

I'd say you guys got #2,3,5,6,7,8 so far. There isn't a need to use math or any other logical reasonings in #1, and read the question more carefully in #4.

#1, 1 hour, unless it is a digital alarm that you can set on 24 hours....

Unless you have no ability to detect sarcasm... i did get #4.....

And number 1 is kinda pointless.... he goes to sleep at 8.... alarm is set to "9 in the morning" thats what it says in the question..... does not mention what kind of alarm clock.. therefore with the information given we must assume that it is digital as only they can set time to "9 in the morning" and therefore he slept 13 hours....

    12 hours sleep.

    2. Do they have a 4th of July in England? Explain.
They do, but it's not an Independance Day.

    3. How many birthdays does the average man have?
    One. When He is born.
    4. Can a man living in Winston Salem, North Carolina be buried West of the Mississippi River?
Of course. his body could theoretically be buried anywhere.

    5. If you had a match and entered a room in which there were a kerosene lamp, an oil heater and a wood burning stove, which item would you light first?

The Stove, because it would create flame which you could light the other two with.

    6. Some months have 30 days, some 31, but how many have 28?

    All Of them.

    7. If your doctor gave you 3 pills and said to take one every half hour, how long would they last?
Depends how you took them - taking one when he speaks then one every half hour after that would wind up at 1 hour.

    8. A house is built so that each side has a southern exposure. If a bear should wander by the house, what would the color of the bear most likely be?
White - You'd be at the North Pole
