Speaking about dumb car ads on the telly, as we recently have, anyone caught the new one for VW Touareg?
I've only seen it once but it consists of an in-car drive sequence with father & young son. As they waft along they're discussing safety aspects of the Veedub - the superior road-visibility provided by the high seating position, and not the least its exceptional crashworthyness etc. Yet through most of this extended conversation, Dad has his head turned and is looking directly to son .. but not at the roadway
To me this epitomises how cheaply sensationalist those 'mandated guidelines' for automotive adverts are, and how much our society has succumbed to the scourge of PC upon our lives
Because apparently the portrayal of a Holden ute doing circle work in a deserted paddock somewhere out in woop woop is perceived by our lawmakers to be highly irresponsible, an almost criminal incitement to dangerous anti-social behaviour behind the wheel. Yet it seems perfectly ok & no worries at all to depict motorists taking their eyes off the road for 5+ seconds at a time .. while sharing a public road in the burbs .. AND while touting 'safe' motoring to their child passenger!
To me that's more than a double-standard - it's sheer hypocracy
