I've been looking at the DSC-H1, I love how it offers lens attatchments. But I just can't decide whether to go DSLR or settle for a "mega-zoom" near SLR type like this... D50, or DSC-H1, any suggestions?

You can get a lens attachments for the Canon S3 IS also, which is a far superior camera. A Digital Rebel with a 300mm lense would be about the same telephoto power that the S3/ DSC-H1 has, and that would be far superior camera than the S3/ DCS-H1.

Yeah I was thinking of the Rebel, little bit more money, but from what I've heard it's a great camera. Is it worth the extra money over the Nikon D50 though?

You might get the same length, but the quality will be severely lacking. Remember it's the lense that makes for a good picture; not the camera.Originally Posted by johnnynumfiv

I'm not a fan of nikon, so yes
W, why would the quality be lacking with a 70-300mm f/4-5.6?

Big zoom, small aparture, and made to be relatively compact. Its made for convenience and not quality.....but then not everyone needs L lens in their bag, and not everyone can afford them....Originally Posted by johnnynumfiv
IMO with a DSLR and a budget Zoom like a 70-300 will get you better pic than a typical Prosumer already, you'll get much less noise, real low-light performance gain(both of the above contributes from the sensor size), and much faster shooting speed.

to be honest, its an amazing camera at the enthusiast level, but if you're thinking of seriously getting into photography you need more versatility than 3 conversion lenses, so now im gonna end up with a Canon D-Rebel XT and the sony, and i will LOVE having bothOriginally Posted by zeppelin

Yeah I handled one a bit they had at Best Buy, it felt okay for the couple minutes I was messing around with it. I have heard complaints about its ergonomics before though...

I held a 350D, which is the next rung up the Canon ladder (IIRC), and it wasn't as good ergonomically as my *ist DS, but it felt more plasticky, so I can't imagine the Rebel being any better. The ergonomics and cheap feel are two things I've read a fair bit. But, most importantly I think, if it feels right in your hand, thats what you should go for. My tutor likes how the 350D feels in his hand, I don't
