Ford recalling nearly 20,000 Mustang Cobras

Gas pedal on sports cars can catch in floor carpeting, lead to crash

    Updated: 4:46 p.m. ET April 11, 2006

WASHINGTON - Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that it was recalling nearly 20,000 Mustang Cobra sports cars after receiving complaints that the back of the accelerator pedal could become caught in the floor carpeting and lead to a crash.

Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in late January that it had received about 100 complaints and allegations of two crashes and one injury. The recall affects 19,140 Mustang Cobras from the 2003 and 2004 model years.

Ford said in a letter to NHTSA that the rear surface of the pedal could interfere with the carpeting during heavy throttling and make it difficult for the pedal to return to an idle position. The problem could be found in vehicles where the floor carpeting does not fit flush with the sheet metal.

Dealers are expected to install a bracket over the cutout in the carpet behind the pedal. Owners are expected to be notified of the recall in late April and will not be charged for the repair.

Last July, NHTSA opened an investigation into accelerator pedal interference in the 2003 and 2004 Mustang, and the 2003 model year of the Mustang convertible and Mustang GT.

Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said the automaker’s investigation only found the issue in the Cobras because the high-performance model has a different pedal configuration than the other Mustang versions.

Talk about poor engineering... No wonder they have such horrible sales! Such a small problem that could have been fixed in the first place if they put the carpet in the right way.

wow it takes one hundred complaints for them to actually do something...that's sad. That's no minor problem too..

I meant Ford as a company. My mistake. The Explorers sell well but they're not exactly the safest vehicles with the rollovers and whatnot.

Ive thought about it a while and here is what I came up with. The 03-04 cobra is one of the most moddified hardest driven cars out with many cars that have ported eatons, whipples, or kb's. Many of these cars have there accelator to the floor on a regular basis with a driver moving the rug everytime he or she gets in and then possibly moving it agian when shifting it could happen to any stick shift car. So I do not think its fords fault for building this car with this error.

I have the same problem with my regular ol v6 one. I thought maybe (had it fixed after a slight ding) the ford engineers just forgot to hook it on, but the back piece of carpet behind the accelerator is just peeling/dangling.

Granted, the only way I could see it 'snagging' would be if I were to just depress the accelerator as far as possible, but still, it is there.

qbridge i dunno about that...your not gonna get much faster than that without stepping into corvette territory...or extremely high priced vehicles...for 38k new thats about the fastest car you'll be able to get behind the wheel of in that price range!

    I was joking.

I like the Mustang because it's cheap and RWD and capable of power but it's heavy and it needs to get on a weight loss program like Jenny Craig.
