Beginner's Camera

Hey everyone. I'm trying to get started in photography, and first things first, I need a camera. I've read some reviews, but honestly I don't know a whole lot about what I'm looking at. I know a lot of you are pretty experienced with the whole photography deal, so I'm hoping you can help me narrow down my search. I just want a decent starter's camera that isn't too crazy expensive . . . just something I can kind of play with until I figure out what I'm doing. I'd appreciate any recommendations or tips of any kind for a novice. Thanks in advance.

Film or digital?

Pentax *ist DS or DS2, whichever you can find, with a Pentax DA 18-50mm and 50-200mm lenses. Small, light, inexpensive, and a great first SLR

Well if you wanna go P&S digital, with some decent manual control and good image quality, the Fuji Film F10 is a good camera. My friend has one, he gets some nice shots out of it.

Can you even get film quality out of a digital?

For now I'll stick to my old Nikon N2000. 22 years old, traveled to Europe and back a half dozen times, has taken hundreds of rolls' worth of shots and still takes phenomenal pictures. Has the "regular" and a telephoto lens, as well.

there are some, body only starts about $4,000 dollars for the cheapest though, nikon d2x, canon eos- 1n mkii s or something like that
