You have explained EXACTLY why if it's 100 or a few hundred it makes a difference.
If company a loses $Y per unit and company b loses $3Y then company a can afford to bankroll for 3 times longer.
    The math is real simple
Both companies have to report to shareholders so it matters !!!!

Many (if not most) people who will buy the PS3 on launch probably will do it regardless of the 360's price. I'm not sure how long it will take for the PS3 components to drop in price enough to meet the retail price, but I don't think they will start competing with the price any time soon after launch.

When MS got into the console market with the first Xbox, selling the consoles at a loss was a risk as the console was a big question mark in most people's books. Sony has a well established fanbase already and they could practically sell the same console (or an inferior one) as MS but for a higher price. If Sony's loss is now 3x more and Microsoft could pull it off then, I believe Sony will make it work now.

I still don't think their loss is alarming. You know how the worn out and often misused saying goes; you gotta spend money to make money... We'll see who comes out on top, when all the consoles have been on the market for a sufficient amount of time and reached their peak audience.

I think the biggest advantage of all is Sony waiting a year to make sure they beat Microsoft. (they will never have to worry about Nintendo competition or lack there of )

Anyways, had Microsoft waited, made the 360 full 1080i and HD, and waited for a Halo 3 launch title, they wouldnt destroyed Sony, no doubt in my mind....but its too late for that, and that is a simple fact.

only solution is to buy all 3 consoles
-Wii for NES and SNES games
    -360 for XBOX Live
-PS3 for Blue Ray games...lonnnnnngggggg games

The thing is, how many games will actually utilise the full capacity of the blu ray discs, or more so a game large enough to go larger than the current dvd game discs used by the 360. I know, i know, there are some already being produced, probably the (now shit) FF series are some, but still, will there be that many games that will have to really use a large amount of the space in a blu ray disc?

Lack of competition from nintendo? Oh dear, i hope you watched that video, from other confrence news, its the same deal, larger audieces are being reported at the Nintendo area's than that of sony's. E3 was a crucial on this year, and personally Sony didn't give us enough, yay MGS4 - i loved that - but what else? not much really, both Nintendo and MS wiped the floor with them - easily. Halo 3 is supposedly being luanched the same time as the ps3, it won't damage Sony's sales at all I dont think but its more of a psychological thing.

One game being released to take on a whole console, it shows the brash confidence of Bungie and MS to firstly bring out a next gen console first, and to release thier flagship title amongst a sea of sony consoles. No doubt PS3's will be sold out, but no doubt attention will be pulled away with the release of Halo 3, hence why I say it isn't a financial strategy for the release date of Halo 3.

I really hope the Wii turns out good. I'd love to play Super Smash Bros. in HD with the motion sensor controller. That would kick so much arse

nintendo receieved a lot of interest from gamers at E3 all the way up to the last day, by which stage sony's booths were empty. also, online polls are showing that nintendo and microsoft are favoured over sony.

Right now it doesnt seem ideal for sony when you look at their price. But it WILL go down. I think that there is an element of genius in the PS3, being that as time goes on the blu ray will shine. Even if it doesnt win the format war, it will help sony in the games dept. In about 2 years time games developers will really have grasped the next gen technology in the systems. Games right now arent even an indicator. The developers are inexperienced with programming for a machine like the PS3, so perfecting the engines and other programming will take time. But think about this: Games are only going to get bigger. Remember the original PS1 ran on CDs!! Then DVDs came, and allowed developers to put so much more into games. Now as the next gen playstation comes out is has the next gen format, being blu ray. Nintendo and microsoft are both using last generations formats, which will hurt them. Ps3 developers will be able to cram in the equivalent of 5 360/ wii games into one blue ray disk. Thats why i lean towards sony. Games like GTA/ driver etc will really benefit from the increased storage. It doesnt just mean more gameplay, it also means less compression, which = better quality.

    And then theres that price.....

But short term MS have the advantage, as one would when they launch a next gen console a whole year before its competitors, but in the long run sony look good. And even in November, there will be the harcore fanboys and early adopters that snap up the PS3. Then once the price eventually goes down (a year? More?) it will go into others' reach.

And as a side note, i have nothing against Xbox but it does annoy me that MS keep going on about their sales of the 360!! Its the only next gen system out, they are in a monopoly postion right now with next gen!! Of course they are getting their sales!!!

The problem with Sony approach is if it doens' then they're shafterd and look stuppid.
MS can chose to put a BD, HD or possibly even a hybrid external drive out any time they chose to. No major redevelopment or upgrade or anythgin involved.
Remember the PSX was suppsoed to be the best thing after the PS2

So the Xbox 360 is about £280 (with accessories)
PS3 (top model) is $599 which is about £320 (used a google money converter!)

Thats only £40 difference, and any external drive scheme for the xbox would undoubtedly cost more than that. So I dont see a massive league difference between them....

LOL i keep thinking to myself about the PSX...it just proves that the playstation name doesnt mean it wil automatically sell...but then again people didnt need psx all they needed was ps2...

And yeah sony will look a bit silly if they lose, and there is also a major financial side to this: The side that loses will have lost alot of money in the process. Personally i want sony to win, not because i like sony better than microsoft (Steve ballmer is my hero;D), but because i want all of that blu ray storage!!!

The worst thing if Sony lose is that nobody will ever enter the consoel game again adn MS will dominate ( may not actually be a bad thing as the simultaneous PC and console game releases then woudlnt' be such a political thing )

The problem with the storage is that some comapnies are going to use it because it's there rather than needed. So gameplay will be sacrificed to create cut scenes and video clips of anything and everything

ie LOOK at TOCA2 and 3. all that crappy pit stuff. If only they'd spent time making a better car sim than making a pseudo movie/gly-on-wall-documentary

As ever the porn industry will ove it
