    1990 Jaguar XJ6

Well, my mom got a call from my aunt down in Florida today and was asked about whether $5,000 for a 1990 Jaguar XJ6 w/ 91,000 miles was a fair price (They claim that it's in excellent condition and garage kept, since they visited the lady at her house yesterday). I told them that the price was a bit too steep, and after KBB'ing it, I was right. The appropriate private seller retail is about $3,000 => $3,850, depending on the trim level/special editions.

Now, going away from the price (which I've determined is $1,000 => $1,500 too high), is the Jaguar XJ6 from the early 90's reliable? I've heard pros and cons for the 6, but I know the 12's infamous for it's horrible reliability and poor efficiency.

For what I've heard from people who has or had 6 cylinder Jaguars, their engine is strong and reliable. Of course a 1990 Jaguar hasn't the build quality of a 1990 Mercedes. But in what comes to the engine, it's not only fast and refined, but also a reliable car. And the most elegant and beautiful of it's time.
If the price was lower, I'd take the chance if I was to buy a car of that kind.
Money can't buy you friends, but you do get a better class of enemy.

I was thinking of mentioning those W126 Mercedes - I own two of them and they are an excellent model. But granted they hold a different appeal than does a Jag

As for Jag reliabilty I'd agree the AJ-6cyl engines could to be the least of your worries, and reputedly the V12 can be viable and very durable *if* scrupulously maintained to a high standard. Cooling and electrics etc including switchgear are of more concern I would have thought, as is oil leaks, tired suspension and gutless airco for Florida climate. For a non-enthusiast buying an XJ the overall target might be to aim for a well loved example with an immaculate and extensive service-receipt history, and for the buyer to have access to a well-regarded specialist who has the skills and commitment to (expensively) realise the car's potential

A long and bulletproof warranty would be a big plus imho
