Maybe you Europeans just suck at drag racing.
Are we talking cars that are used to drive on the roads daily tho ?
I was citing times for Crail ( it's a cold track and no sticky tarmac tho ! )

DId a check tho' and Santa Pod isn't really any faster .... http://www.rwyb.co.uk/cc_results2006.php

Are these times that are verified or just quoted ? From lights to line ??

You'd have to put some VERY fat rubber on fronts to get much better, A Jetta doing 11.7 ? Is it on 9" wide rims ? Can it TURN a corner ?
And if you really want to go fast in a straight line for cheap, it's already been said: Fox Mustang 5.0...

Daily driven. For the most part, they roll in to tech, drop their pressures, and run. A couple guys swap front wheels to something lighter with some DOT slicks, but for the most part they "run what they brung."

I always ask to see slips. We have four 1/4 mile tracks within 2 hours of the school, so it's not hard to go run legally.

I think they're 17x8.5's up front. He daily drives it during the summer. 400whp and northeastern winters don't typically get along.

They're a little pricey over here, if you can find one.

Well, you don't know that track days outside the USA are cheap, so that must make you just as ignorant, right?
well do you live where i live? if you dont then you are foriegn to me are you not? i didnt say there was anything wrong being a foriegner i just said that you were one. nothin wrong with that. i didnt call people ignorant for not knowing track days are expensive i called you ignorant for bashing a car everytime its mentioned because its american. and i do know track days are much cheaper in most other countries..therefore i am not ignorant but thats besides my point anyways since the ignorance wasnt knowing that track days are expensive!

when have i bashed anybody on this board for being from another country? other than saying you guys are being ignorant which for the most part a lot of you are. i havent bashed anybody so that point is moot.

ignorance. seriousley tho. im not saying some don't but not all foreign cars handle like their on rails either contrary to popular belief here (as a lot of you would make it seem at least"

i dont understand what your saying? theres a double standard because i dont like to hear people bash drag racing? wouldnt a double standard be if i didnt like you talking trash about a sport but then i went and talked trash about one of your sports? since i did no such thing as i like almost all types of racing (i find nascar and the like to be boring but i certainly don't bash people for liking it, just not my thing, unlike you guys who redicule a lot of popular american motor sports) there is no double standard on my part. you just proved my point. nice try tho

Why shouldn't Americans take the view point that "Foreigners don't like drag racing - therefore we should stop trying to ram how great it is down their throats"?

    It swings both ways...

please explain to me what i am biased about? i never critisized one thing about the way you guys do things in other countries. all that stuff is just peachy with me. i'm a fan of most things you guys are fans of and things that you guys are a fan of that im not really into i certainly don't ridicule you because of it unlike you guys once again. im not trying to ram drag racing down anybody throats. drag racing isnt even really my thing, im just saying its nowhere near as bad as you guys make it out to be but its still a pretty good time and its affordable thats all. it doesnt need to be made fun of by a bunch of people acting like 3rd graders.

    400whp in a FWD Jetta ?
I'm going to want to see the slip and the specs on that.
Coz once you've put in a gearbox/diff to cope with that amount of power then it's not really a "Jetta" any longer !!

( I also googled believing you to see if I coudl find the car ... the lack of any numbers even anwhere NEAR that number makes me suspicious )

There's the basic specs on the car. I'm trying to find the Eurotuner article where he was featured for more. The turbo's a T04E. He was running a stock trans until last winter, when after 165,000 miles it finally broke. There's a slip of a high 12 on the Vortex, but I know I have a video of him running sub 12s. It might be on a disk at my apartment. I'll keep looking...

a 9.15 still with street rego isn't too bad
    http://www.dragtimes.com/Holden--Tor...ag-Racing.html

For cheapest straight-line go I'd suggest an early Holden Torana (LC or LJ) for $500 and up, buy a used 308 V8 & g'box with LSD etc for another $1500 tops (plus fit) an easy conversion. An aftermarket chassis-reinforce kit is available to make it all legal, if required. Those things are so light it only needs 250hp to get into the 12s with street tyres on 6" rims

So, my mate who drags his NIssan 300 corrected some of my misconceptions based on cars we see up here

    Nissan SUNNY doing 11.1 sec 1/4mil .... 450-500whp !!
LOTS of momney spent controlling wheel tramp to keep the traction.
AND still reasonably OK on smoothish roads.
All the bits availabe from dp motorsport in the UK. SO nothgin too specialised or one-off !!

So I take back on FWD getting sub 12s.
He DID talk about TENS of thousands being spent to achieve this !!
And that it featured on Fifth Gear where it outdragged a Viper
Not one I'd have said a FWD could have taken !!!!

I don't know the cheapest way to build a 13s car, but I sure know the fastest time to build one...

    You guessed it, 13s flat.

Are you kidding me? LT1s with good drivers are definetly high 13 second cars. Making over 300hp (rated around 280-300) and roughly 3400lbs you can do the math.
    Heres a C&D article on a 96 LT1 cars:
    http://www.stangbangers.com/96_Cobra...rd_Article.htm
throw some exhaust and a set of gears and maybe a cam in one and you could have yourself a 13 second car with ease tho.
With those mods and sticky tires youd be in the 12s...
Catback exhaust alone frees up a good 20hp.
hell my car prob runs mid 14's and i dust LT1's all day long. their heavy and have really tall gearing to cruise the highway with. ive got plenty of experience with the 4th gen f-bodies so i know about em. im not saying they are hard to make into a 13 second car tho nor are they all that expensive.
These LT1s that you "dusted" were in good condition? All cylinders firing? The ones with the "really tall gears" are the autos with the optional 2.89 gear. The T56 cars came with a 3.42 gear.
both of your points were correct but a fox body is much much more affordable and just a better platform all around.
    I agree.
