    225mph Brabus breaks speed records

Based on a Mercedes CLS, the new Brabus Rocket is powered by a tuned 6.2-litre version of Mercedes’ biturbo V12. With a new crankshaft, larger turbos, better intercooling and a new exhaust, it produces a faintly ludicrous 718bhp at 5100rpm. Maximum torque is 973lb ft but the output is electronically capped at 811lb ft.

To claim the record, the Rocket reached a V-max of 225.2mph round the high-speed bowl at Nardo, thus beating its forebear the Brabus E V12 Biturbo by 7.6mph. Road versions will be limited to a paltry 217mph, although this won’t stop them hitting 62mph in 4 seconds dead and 124mph in just 10.2sec. Wiping off all that velocity are 12-piston front callipers and six-piston rears on 375mm ceramic front and 355mm steel rear discs. The tyres for the high-speed run were Yokohama Advans.

And the price of all this? £261,715. Just say it quickly.

222.5MPH - thats pretty bloomin quick!

Just one question- where in real, day-to-day life would you get an opportunity to use that speed?

    And birdman, it's $499,273.70

I know you won't be able to do that speeds like it's nothing, but still, why would you?

Never drove a car like that, but like, the cars with the limiters on 155mph? (250kph) are quite easy to get to their limiters, so it might be easier then you think. Offcourse, not when there's traffic on the road.

The final few mph/kmh are always the hardest to get. A combination of friction, air resistance and the car's engine running out of puff. A Corvette ZR1 from the early '90s can hit a theoretical 288mph, but in real life it translates into 186mph.

You would never be able to drive at 220mph in "real, day-to-day life" on an Autobahn.

Germany has traffic too you know.
    Thanks for all the fish

Yeah, the last bits are difficult, but when a car can go 300kph and it's limited to 250 it's not that hard to do such speeds on the highway. For example, the Audi Le Mans Quattro (R8?) can go 345km/h, it reaches 200 in 9,9s? or just above 10s so going 250kph really isn't that hard. Offcourse that a big difference with 300kph or faster, but then, why do you need such speed? I mean, it's only something you can say at the dining table in the restaurant... And then everybody can be amased.

And just to know your luxury sedan can reach such speed, is something to be proud of.

On your exemple, of the Corvette, that's an american car... Amaricans don't do gearboxes. They probably still sell 4speeds.

The biggest problem with attaining silly speeds is the rate you cover ground... you run out of space very quickly at 200mph.

Anyway, cars like this are designed to go that fast so that when they're being driven at 'sensible' speeds (120 - 150mph) they are about as stressed as Valium-laced Kimi Raikkonen. Anyone who went to the MPH SHow last year could dig out their programme and read my feature about it if they like. It's quite good
