    Bmw Z29

    1999 BMW Z29
Conceived as a test platform for the Z5, a car which, sadly, never came to fruition. The Z29 was aimed at the Porsche 911 and Honda NSX. It was intended to be a 2 seat sports coupe built on a carber fiber and aluminum chasis. It was abandoned, most probably due to the high cost of development, and BMW went with the more traditionally constructed Z4. The car weighed 1160Kg and was powered by an a 343HP M3 engine, and was capable of 0-63 in 4.4 seconds.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Wish it was in production...

BMW needs a halo sports car. The M6 is a bit chubby to do so.

Isn't the M10 supposedly to take the M6's V-10 and turn it into a carbon fiber monster? I remember reading a thread this week about it.

    it's a nice car
the M6 could be a major competitor if they gave it less weight, took out i-drive and eliminated the speed limiter.

The car IS the Z29, but it was introduced in 2006. It's based on the Z4 M Coupe and uses lightweight parts to reduce its weight.

    From CarBodyDesign.com's New section
AutoMotorUndSport has published pictures of a BMW concept car codenamed Z29, a two-seater sports coupé with a carbon-fiber and aluminum chassis.
According to the German magazine, the Z29 was conceived in 1999 to serve as a basis for the Z5 model, which would compete against the Porsche 911 and the Honda NSX.

Possibly high development costs made BMW prefer to abandon this project, and the Z4 was based on a more conventional steel unibody structure.

Thanks to the 1,160 kg total weight and the M3-derived unit delivering 343-hp, the Z29 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, and its top speed is 270 km/h.

As you can see it is a prototype, so I will delete "concept" from my firdt post. Z29 is it's codename.
It is not based on the Z4.

It certainly isn't. I am only going with that story because it seems to be the most widely reported. Either way, it is an interesting car.

IMO, despite the impressive weight and performance figures for this BMW Z29 I think this is the equal ugliest BMW I have ever seen. The BMW X5 is the other one... Surprisingly...

It's not that pretty, but it definitely looks like a version of the M Coupé...
