The Gydo pass Classic mountain race

In Ceres, South Africa we had the Gydopass classic mountain race for the last couple of years. But i think, due to lack of classics this race was opened to all cars and the fastest of the fastest is able to compete.
Last weekend this went horribly wrong..... Check the pix. Although this is not a classic vehicle i feel the post belong here as it is a classic event. It started as a normal hillclimb event. Check the first two pix. And later disaster..........

Luckily no one died here. One girl lost both her legs and 21 were injured{minor}. One lucky day for SA motorsport

Looks a nice route, but scary where they've let lots of people stand ... and the odd single individual too !!!!!

They had another crash into the crowd, same type of car seemingly

GETTING IT VERY, VERY WRONG: In this amazing sequence by photographer Kevin van Blerk we see Stokkies van Zyl losing control of his Chev Lumina bakkie (top), locking up the brakes as he slides off the road (second) and ploughing through a stone wall (third). In the fourth picture we see spectators running away from the scene and finally, above, marshals attach a tow rope to pull the Lumina back on to the road.

EDIT: 4th picture .... is that a bong in the guys hand ??????

Its not unsafe if spectators aren't retards. There are safe places to stand and stupid ones. Anyone who stands with their daughter on the exit from a fast corner needs their heads looking at.

Events get banned because of stuff like this when really better crowd control and more sensible crowds should mean only competitors and inaminate objects are at risk.

Are you joking about the warning? I am shocked by them but I don't think people need warning.

It might just be my opinion but i think its good that people are surprised, as it makes people think more. People are too protected nowadays.

I feel the same. Motorsport is a dangerous sport and for the spectators even more dangerous. On any such event there are always a governing body looking after the well being of spectators. I've seen on this specific event that the spectators jump the wall to get a much better view of the approaching vehicle. By doing that they narrow the track by 50%, and thats when the situation is prone for disaster.

The shot in question was taken off by W yesterday, so if you didnt view this thread until today, you wouldn't have seen it.
(I don't know if that is actually true, I'm just inferring that from the evidence)
