Life's too short to drive bad cars.
I got 35 mpg (14.88 km/l) over an 85 mile trip today. I averaged 67 mph too.

My VW Polo GTI avgs around 8.9L/100km urban or 6.5L/100km out on the freeway. Pends if im running the AC, giving it a bootfull, using cruise control or driving manually etc etc.
The Datto will rage again...
What engine does your VW have bluey?
When I floor it with my 2.0T it gets about 30L/100km .
Do you find that cruise control makes a big difference with yours? I know it makes a huge difference for mine.

That's nothing... 42L/100km in the Jag if you drive it like it is inteded...

used roughly a quarter to a third of a tank on sunday (25-30L) over a 350km trip. felt pretty good, motorway cruising and twisty mountain bits in equal measure.

got a full tank run through the rx-7.. only taken 6 months or so. averaged out to 17mpg. not too terrible actually. rather surprising.

6,8L/100km (35mpg US/42mpg US), without caring about being careful with the throttle. When it comes to fuel consumption diesel is still unbeatable.
EDIT By comparison the last tank in the Mini was 12L/100km (20mpg US/24mpg UK), altough that was driving as it should be driven.

Came back from Southern France today,
1274 km, average speed 116 kph, mileage 7.1 liter per 100km. (or in US terminology 33.1 mpg). Initial mileage in Southern France was hampered by a strong mistral, so we began at about 7.5 liter. (Factory mileage of the car is 6.5). We didn't care too much but wanted to be home as quickly as possible (11 hours 18 minutes as total travel time, two stops)
On another note: A dutch magazine tested six cars (by non professional drivers) on about the same long distance trip, and of course the four diesel cars in the test were more economic than the Prius and the Honda Insight. The Peugeot 207 won and managed 1 liter for every 25.9 km, The Opel Insignia Ecoflex managed 1 liter for 20.8 km, (and did the trip The Hague-Barcelona, over 1500 km on one fuel tank) while the Prius achieved 1 liter for 19.9 km and the Insight only 1 per 17.8 km. It should be noted that according to the ECE figures the Prius should have consumed only 1 liter per 25.6 km....Somebody should sue Toyota for that.....

When it comes to greenosity and saving the environment/universe, it is clear that diesel is superior to hybrid.
Is biodiesel catching on in Europe or is that mostly staying here?

Not so sure.
It's around, but there seems to now be more consideration given to the wider impact of biodiesel which seems to dampen the past enthusiasm.
Especially wrt food crops in 3rd world areas where they are being pushed aside to grow "oil crops" and in the pollution caused by it's production.
