I believe the XJ220 did 217mph with Martin Brundle at the wheel, but it was on a banked oval. Apparently if you correct for the losses involved through tyre scrub from constantly turning on the oval then it equates to 220mph on the straight. So it never literally hit 220 but they claim it did on a technicality.
Why do I remember it as 218? Whatever 1mph is negligable. Didn't they have to take the wing off?
