Top five cars that fit your own budget?

What are the top five cars you'd look at if you were in the market right now, with whatever budget you're on? I'll start, and I'll even leave the classics aside since I'm sure y'all don't really want to hear about those!

    - VW Jetta TDi
    - VW GTi 1.8t or VR/6
    - '94 Mustang GT or Cobra Convertible
    - '92-'93 Bronco
    - '89-up Ford Ranger 4x4 with 4.0l and 5-speed
An it harm none, do as ye will

Approximately 79% of statistics are made up.

    In no particular order...

First gen Miata, with either a low-boost turbo setup or LSx swap.
Corrado, with the world-defeating 1.8T swap.
E30 M3. Probably would put a E36 motor in it.
E36 M3. Probably would put a E46 motor in it.
Mk2 Jetta coupe, with a 2.0T FSI swap.

I have a problem with stock motors.

It's a pretty simple formula. Older (lighter) car + newer (more advanced) motor = fast.

Corrado's never came with 3.2L VR's. And it's easier to make a 1.8T fast than a VR6. Not to mention cheaper.

Yea, we have those. Lyshoms are fun but they take way too much maintenance. Rebuilding the charger every 40-60,000 miles isn't my idea of a good time. (I drove 30,000 miles this year alone) A lot of guys lately have been taking G60 blocks, and putting 20v heads and turbos on them. Pretty good results, and you don't have the wiring headaches to deal with.

I'm 18 so I'd have to consider insurance with these, however...

    ...for about £7,500:

    2003 Mini Cooper

A real hot hatch. We already own two Mini diesels, great for driving instruction but the pace makes you want to get out and push. Might be a bit iffy on insurance but it'd hold value so it's a double edged sword. The colour would have to be bright. Or black.

    Toyota Aygo 1.0 3-door
If it had to be new, I'd plump for one of these. Beats the Fiat Panda because not only would residuals be better, but it wouldn't fall apart before they even mattered. A slightly smaller but sharper car.

    2002 "02-Reg" Vauxhall Vectra (B) CDX 2.2DTi 5-door
If only I could find a silver / black one with a leather interior and under 50k miles...I'd have plenty of change too...for the erm, insurance.

    2003/4 Vauxhall Vectra 2.2DTi Elegance/SRi 5-door
I could afford either the car or the insurance, but not both. I wont even go into other similarly sized / engined motors. That's a dream too far.

and finally; there are probably loads of classics that would fit the bill, therefore I'll leave this space for them.

Erm... I we asked autotrader.co.uk and our survey said...

    1. Vauxhall VX220 2.2 n/a
    2. Lotus Elise S1 Sport 160
    3. Lotus Elise S2 Sports Tourer
    4. Renault Clio V6
    5. A ratty Porsche Boxster 2.5 (Not completely sold on that one... Couldn't think of anything better)

Bit of a theme running through there. Budget's about £12k, if anyones interested.
