My ipod Photo battery has lasted all of a year and a half, not so good and im not happy with how long it's lasted, as well as the following problems (freezing, slowing down etc.)

Saying that it is a good mp3, I myself will be looking to be either a video or another mp3 to test the water.

Another note, the iTunes compatibility is another reason to think about getting one, versatily and you can create playlists quite easily

A bloke at work has one and I was having a play with it the other day and it was very good.

    Another vote for the Sansa.

Daughter has one. Excellent sound and the video is VERY watchable -- she is a Monk and Lost fan and torrent is her friend

No hard disk drive to worry about if dropped/mis-treated.
LOADS of battery life, VERY easy software and expandable memory with Micro-SD cards ( $40/Gb at the moment coming down )

Downsides .... max 8Gb+1Gb ( but bigger cards coming and geting cheaper )
and video format compression file size is poor compared to DivX ( but quality very good )
and (worst of all) the European versions have the FM radio disabled

So many people seem to have trouble with their iPods... I had a 2nd gen for over 3 years, no problem and then gave it to a friend and it's still working fine. I'm on my second now (first gen video) had it for a year now, no problems. It's a little choppy/freezes up a bit, but that's probably because it was one of the first video iPods on the market.
i was waiting on a moment, but the moment never came. all the billion other moments, were just slipping all away. i must have been tripping, we're just slipping all away. just ego tripping.

My friend had a Creative Zen. It was like an Ipod, but with an extra 20GB drive as well as the original, that can store stuff (not play them). Very useful, but it was priced to compete with the 20GB Ipod, which meant it fell apart pretty fast. He took it back, they held it for like 5 months to fix it...but it didnt cost him a dime.

Anyway. Then he got an Iriver. It had color, could view photos. But thats about it aside from basic functions like music.
At the moment he has a newer Creative Zen I think. I'm quite sure its some kind of Creative. It hasnt shown any signs of breaking, it plays videos very well, and I think its priced the same as its competitors. Looks great too.

Thats the extent of my knowledge.

i own one as well... i don't think they sell them, and i would definately buy the new one over it because it won't let me listen to all of the tracks from an artist, just the ones in a certain album. Something which Sony have sorted since

or, like it has in england, at first you were original if you didnt buy an ipod, then you became common because everyone was original, now it seems not having an mp3 player in the first place is the right thing

anyway, i had alot of trouble with the technical side of my sony. Ipods are too flimsy for me. Creatives look, feel and work very well. They sell the zen micro for £60 on ebay now. If not, the video-zen. THatd be my choice.

    Zen Vision M = Good
Zen Touch = Very good battery (best battery i've ever seen, claimed 24 hrs, more like 20, but still bloody good!)
Zen Sleek Photo = What i have, £110 from Argos (everywhere else there about £200!) - quite good!

Good stuff, stores photos, 10 hrs of tunes, and I can use it for riding 'cause it's super small and light.

    Right,

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I've been trawling round the shops to try and get a look and touch of what's available. My conclusions so far:

Samsung yp z5: quite plasticy and not very stylish

Ipod Nano: much smaller screen than I thought

Sandisk Sansa: can't find the bloody thing (Matra, did you get it online or could you find it in a shop?)

I would like to have a first hand look at the Sandisk before making my choice but if not it could be the Ipod.

Another choice is for another £20 you can get the 30Gb HardDisk Ipod over the 8Gb Nano!

Precisely the problem with the 8Gb Nano

I've got a 5G Video iPod (30 Gb) and have, contrary to believe, never had a a problem with it. I've heard such bad things about iPods but it's over 1 1/2 years old now and it's still running VERY strong. It's about treating them right - as with any Mp3 player if you mess with it it's going to cause grief.

    I recommend it

people who say "if you buy an iPod you're a tool/F*g/girl" honestly piss me off. Get a life, Get a Clue, Get some original thought.

A shop - so we could try it before buying - which was recently opened by an on-line store ....

    find them at www.advancedmp3players.co.uk

For a bit if fun, here's a Sansa-converted clip of my appearance on the BBC news - yes me in the background between my two daughters cars competing on the rally Not the best original quality, but gives you an idea of size/frame rate etc.
