It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

No it's not. It's czech. The swedish dance is called polska.Originally Posted by dydzi

Actually Wikipedia tells that polska is from 16th century Poland. Which makes perfect sense as polska means Polish in Swedish, where the dance was popular in the 18th century.Originally Posted by go.pawel
Edit: of course I don't know what that dance is called in Poland.
Edit2: to not take over the thread, late bday congratulations to Dydzi!

It's not a polish dance so it doesn't have a specific name in polish. The most probable explanation of the name is that it was invented at the swedish court by some polish artists during the polish-swedish union at the end of the XVI century.Originally Posted by twinspark
As for polka, that dance was originally called "pulka", which means "half" in czech language (it's a 2/4-beat dance). The name got changed to "polka" as a sign of solidarity with polish insurgents of the 1830-31 uprising.

Okay, I don't feel like arguing about your own history, especially as my knowledge is limited to wikipedia's information that isn't exactly bulletproof.Originally Posted by go.pawel

Sorry I had no time to read everything there, so I concentrated on the important issue...Originally Posted by go.pawel
