Well coupe literally means "cut" which normally referred to the roof line. Now introducing the fastback principle everything has become slightly blurred. Remember the R Type Continental Fastback? What is it? And the already mention ed Rover P5 was just a marketing thing.....
The Mercedes CLS has been dubbed a coupe, but when Brabus got the speed records with the "Rocket" they then called it a world speed record for four door sedans....

As mentioned when I nominated the Rover P5, the Coupe version meets the literal definition imo as the roofline IS cut (lower, shorter & more raked)

Imo what Brabus thinks is irrelevant, but as for your implication that coupes should only be 2-seaters, well I think I've quite effectively debunked this proposition via these 5-seater '46 Fords (one model-range among a multitude of examples) because the entitled Coupe version roofline IS 'cut' when compared to the same-year Tudor sedan variant

well I am currently in the process of renaming all my shots that I took at Pebble Beach last year, and already in the twenties and thirties everybody seemed to disagree as to what should be called what....

I'm sure all of this can be blamed on the car company's marketing department.
