    Cornell Splits Audioslave

Cornell Splits Audioslave, Covers Michael Jackson
    Audioslave
    February 15, 2007, 4:10 PM ET
    Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Chris Cornell has split Audioslave, the band he formed with three former members of Rage Against The Machine, due to unspecified "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences," according to a statement, which concludes, "I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors."

Cornell is quickly moving on to his second solo album, "Carry On," due May 1 via Suretone/Interscope. The 14-track set was produced by Steve Lillywhite and includes a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" (which Cornell has been known to play live) as well as "You Know My Name," the theme to the recent James Bond film "Casino Royale."

The album is Cornell's first solo affair since 1999's "Euphoria Morning." Among the other songs set to appear are the country-leaning "Finally Forever" and the harder-edged "Poison Eye" and "No Such Thing."

Audioslave released three studio albums since coming together in 2001, but the band did not tour behind its most recent set, "Revelations." Band members never publicly addressed their uncertain future, although privately, sources close to the situation said Audioslave had been on ice for some time.

"Audioslave's really been more of a collaboration, anyway, and I'm a guy that writes a lot of songs, and I write a lot by myself," Cornell told Billboard.com last August.

Last month, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk announced they were reuniting with Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha for what they are claiming to be a one-off performance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in late April in Indio, Calif.

Hmm, so Cornell has quit, so the other 3 guys will have a lot of free time after RATM's show at Coachella...hmmm....

I've got Out of Exile and Revelations...not bad albums, but I couldnt really see Audioslave was going to ever be a long-term thing anyway. Hope all 4 of them enjoy success with their new careers.

Agreed. Hopefully Tom Morello will find something to do, he's a damn good guitarist.

Soundgarden was much better than audioslave too. I'll be watching all their paths closely. And yes, Tom Morello is an amazing guitarist.

The only good CD they had was the first one, after that, they kind of went to crap.

We need Rage back, I loved the way they mocked the law and politics.

I wouldnt say any of Audioslave's albums were especially brilliant - not in the way Soundgarden or RATM stuff was - but each of the three albums I think has good moments - "Wide Awake" from Revelations comes to mind.

I like all of them, audioslave, ratm and soundgarden, and i hope noone says that euphoria morning sucked, theyr all different types of music, from different times.

All great music at least for me.

Sorry, i am biased towards their first CD. gasoline is probably my all time favorite song of there's as well as many more. And some in their later CD's, but the first one was just the ice cream cake for me.

Sad news for me, im quite fond of Audioslave, its (mostly) easy listening rock which swings from pop to hard edge material. Personally, only revelations seemed to stand out as the most solidly produced album and im confident that somewhere in their plans they made it out to be a last hurrah.

Good luck to all of them, Chris Cornells first solo effort was solid and had some great songs in their, lets hope the second will let him be more creative and less restricted - Morello's work is fine, to an extent. I feel that his talents have been choked ever since the last RATM album. There hasn't been anything extrodinarly different in what he has done of late.

    Soundgarden > RATM > Audioslave

Superunknown on its own merits propells Soundgarden above the two beforementioned bands.

RATM, so and so. They have their moments, De La Roche however tries to rap his way to greatness, but fails miserably with some at times sub par song writing.
