I think your point of view on this subject is very clear.

And your brick of gold thing doesn't do much sense I'm afraid.
I believe that when you take a picture, you should use as much time as possible at the spot, to make it as good photography as possible under the given circumstances. That makes a good photographer.
Being at a good spot at the right time, divides the good and bad photographer.

You wouldn't win with a picture of a gold brick. but your treatment of the gold Brick WHEN YOU WERE TAKING THE PHOTO might just win you the comp.

you won't win with a crappy shot. period.

And you shouldn't win by making an average shot awesome by editing. otherwise the competition gets lazy.

Drifting back a few posts to the whole editing issue...

I'd like for you guys (I don't take pictures so I'm not involved) to be on an even playing field by making sure there is no editing involved, considering that many of the members here lack Photoshop and any of the other high calibre editing suites. But, due to the egos of certain members people will cheat, even if it involves slight adjustments barely visible to the naked eye, just to steal a win in the competition.

Like someone mentioned earlier, it's a trust thing. If someone breaks the trust, then the honor policy of the competition gets thrown to flames, and the use of visual editing takes on dishonesty as its catalyst.

    Carry on now.

I say that we close down photo competitions for some months.
See if people likes that option better.

So true and exactly my opinion.

Well the gold brick was just an example, you know. But it seems almost everyone votes for the nicest car in the Auto. comp for example. Or offcourse favor voting, very much so done here.

I was just illustrating the way you came across by the way

That's not necessarily true. From what I've noticed, the best photograph usually winds, but what do I know.. I'm a scrub.

So why do you want to edit your photos?

Because it can enhance certain effects and create new ones impossible otherwise. My camera has it's limitations, which could be compensated with it for example. Apart from that, it is a huge part of current day photography. Since plenty of people cheat anyway, why shouldn't I ?

    Poor thing.
You got over it and you're now a better person.

Many people kill themselves. Why shouldn't you?
Money can't buy you friends, but you do get a better class of enemy.

That may be, but it is completely irrelevant for these competitions.

That's about the weakest arguement anybody can think off. Pathetic really.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

That's such a cop out. Pretty much everything you can do in Photoshop you can do when you take the photo. If you have a manual control option on your camera it's more of a cop out.

Much of the work he claims needed to be done after the fact you can do on that particular camera.

I know, I have the same model.

So you admit that you have cheated, and you will do it again.
Fine. All your entries from now on will be deleted.

To me, the rules are fine the way they are. Everything in very clear. People who break them know what they're doing, therefore they would probably do the same if the rules were different.
