Heres one I have been pondering for awhile now. What is the function of this??? It is on the rear of the Ferrari FXX.

Looks like an air jack hose socket.
They plug the hose on there and the inbuilt jacks extend from the floor

No Mr. Craig, I expect you to die! On the inside. Of heartbreak. You emo bitch
Don't the jacks add weight (the tubing, pneumatic tubes, complexity, stuff like that)?
It would seem easier just to use regular jacks.
May add weight, but many less mechanics needed and on a car that is not racing weight isn't a huge issue.

Nope. Different thing entirely I believe. Harmonic Balancer I was wondering if anyone could give me more information on a hamonic balancer, aka crank pulley damper, torsional damper, vibration damper.
ah, got you.
That's a dampener, not a "balancer".
Mixed engineering terminology
A balancer is about introducing forces in opposition to the main object to reduce movement.
A dampener is about absorbing some of the forces to reduce movement.
yeah as described ... a mass with an absorbing material connecting to the piece. So the mass provides a "stable" platform for an absorbing element to limit the vibration. Usually a metalastic material.
"A woman without curves is like a road without bends, you might get to your destination quicker but the ride is boring as hell'
Famously used on many an american V8...
basically as the wikipedia article states it is used to absorb vibrations caused by the torque impulses as each piston fires to make sure that even when they happen at the resonant frequency of the crankshaft they don't "resonate" and causes increased stress that will damage the crankshaft.
They are normally used on low revving american V8s that were used for racing because the increased RPM they operated at (when racing) happened to mean that the torque impulses regularly happened at the crankshaft's resonant frequency.
Also as noted many racers decided that they didn't need them... although I remember hearing about how someone used to do some math and mark a red area on his tach.... to remind him to not keep the engine spinning in that rpm range.
Power, whether measured as HP, PS, or KW is what accelerates cars and gets it up to top speed. Power also determines how far you take a wall when you hit it
Engine torque is an illusion.
Another quick question-
What are steam pipes for in big cities?
I believe it heats buildings
