Officials Move To Stamp Out Street Races

I've heard about this for some time, about the cars of street racers being confiscated and eventually crushed.
Here are two stories about it in yesterday's newspapers.
The first two scans are from the Los Angeles Times and the third is from the L.A. Daily News.

Good idea, for two reasons. It'll probably put a stop to street racing and some truly tasteless cars will disappear from the earth.

    Great.

Yes, true. But I don't think it will put a stop to street racing because that has gone on for over 50 years and some racers probably think they will never get caught or can "run" from the police. Also, there is not exactly a huge amount of police out here; just too many people (and drivers) for the cops to cover the whole area.

There should be an exception, though, for classic muscle cars. Those are too rare and desirable to be crushed. Although, these days, probably more than 90% of street racers are ricers.

But well it's a start. It shows that they care about it and that they are trying to do something to stop. Which is better than knowing it and doing nothing.

So, they seize your car and crush it?

It appears as such. they need to catch you doing something illegal first i'd imagine.

I do like the idea of stripping the parts out for a charity auction.. except that they'd probably just end up back into street racers' cars.

Yeah, the article said stolen parts on/in the car or no VIN number.

Yeah, it really is hard to stop it.
You know, one of my high school friends was a street racer. This was back in the late-'70s.
His car was a '67 Mustang with a 351-Cleveland engine and 4.11 gears. He said it ran about 13.0s in the 1/4 mile; I don't know if he ever had it timed.

The races were done late night/early morning. He would go around 2:00 AM. He asked me to go with him once or twice, but I really couldn't think of how I could convince my parents I was going to be at his house and not watching street races at 2:00 AM.

Lol. Just take the metal out first before you chomp on it.

Yeah, that really wouldn't help when you think about it.

Yea, it'd essentially make it cheaper to get the parts anyway.
