It doesnt surprise me, Iran had a go at Hollywood for the film 300 because they think portraying the Persian army as monsters was an attack on them.

Seems fair to me
"A woman without curves is like a road without bends, you might get to your destination quicker but the ride is boring as hell'
Good for them, its not like they havent been the victim of the US for decades, they should be able to vent that rage in a video game...
I'm sure they vent that rage elsewhere anyway. Maybe the game could keep them engaged in the virtual world, and then they wouldn't have time to cause death and destruction in the real one?
Most popular western modern combat games involve the middle-east as some form of enemy. A.K.A Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike etc. OK a response to the way they are being represented in western video gaming may be justified, but in doing so it immediately unifies them to the terrorist unions that are at war with the US in the first place. Its a question of good and bad. And by this example it seems both sides claim to be the good guys.

Obviously the "row" over 300 is a complete nonsense; it was an adaptation of a graphic novel, intended to glorify the bravery and determination of the Scottish, sorry, Spartan soldiers at Thermopylae - it is no surprise that their enemy is and exaggerated mob of barbarians. The argument is lazy propaganda.
However, a large number of games do portray the brave "American hero" defeating some highly improbable scheme devised by "foreigners", either as individuals or states.
Splinter Cell depicting an aggressive invasion of South Korea by the North, defeated, of course, by a single American soldier...
It seems fairly logical that the tables will be turned at some point to lay the highly improbable schemes in the feet of the American government.
No doubt, whereas depicting North Korea as an aggressive warmongering nation might be dismissed as "harmless fun", the USA being portrayed in a similar vein will obviously be an evil corruption of innocent children, turning them into raving fundamentalists by the end of the second level...
... but then, isn't that what propaganda is all about?
Thanks for all the fish
Whos good and whos bad cant really be identified, theyve both done, and continue to do, some horrific shit, the US more than Iran, however the US started this age old conflict. The problem with Americans is that they cant empathize with anyone, nor can they put themselves in someone elses shoes. If China or North Korea did the same things the US has done to the Middle East, Mexico, or Central and South America i GUARANTEE Americans would resort to the same tactics they are now the victims of...
this is sweet.
while they're at it, i also want a WW2 game where i can play as germans, and crush those pesky french.
Andreas Preuninger, Manager of Porsche High Performance Cars: "Grandmas can use paddles. They aren't challenging."
I've always wondered when a WW2 game in the eyes of a german would come along. But the answer is strictly: never. Tom Cruise was banned from germany because his Scientologist beliefs consider him a Nazi. For the same reason, anyone making a german WW2 game, unless you as a player inevitably come to a bloody demise at the end of the game, would be considered a Nazi gaming developer, and it wouldnt be published anywhere, or infact it wouldnt get the funding to start with. So it has to be said that the only people who get funding for games are either western or make games with little religious or historically biased background.
It is only the arabs, then, that can make a game that challenges the biggest gaming industry in the world by making a game that works against them. I wouldnt expect it to become a regular sight though

Good point, and well put. I actually wouldnt mind playing as the VietCong, terrorists, Germans, etc., it would be a nice change from the same old ****ing campaigns OVER and OVER...
Well, no, but then; that's what propaganda is all about.
Muslims vs Christians, West vs (Middle)East as a conflict has been ticking over since the crusades, and probably well before then - remember how some Arab named "Jesus" was nailed to a tree by some "Westerners", i.e. the Romans, who didn't like his religion?
As the US has only been around for 230 years, I don't think you can really blame them for "starting it".
Well, I think there is ample scope for games where the major protagonists are "foreign" in places such as Pakistan & India, China, Russia, etc.,.
Thanks for all the fish
Yes, however THAT age old conflict simmered down somewhat, however when you oust a countries democratically elected leaders, replacing them with your own dicatators, and thus begin raping the country then youre essentially stirring up the hornets nest. And what Americans dont seem to know is that just because they Americans does NOT make them exempt from falling victim to tactics other countries fell victim to, or losing. Remember Vietnam, America just KNEW they were going to win because they were AMERICAN, however the French got their asses handed to them for the same pompous attitude...
^^ Based on what fact?
For example
(ex-MD of ADG)
For me, this is just copying.
HOW many US developed games feature scenarios where US forces go into "persian" bases and blow S**t up? it's still cool, no?
Why should it be any different on the other side of the fence?
I hate to drop the Dreaded X word into this convo but i'm feeling it, alright.

can we not put a ban on all these "purpose to kill" games???
"I find the whole business of religion profoundly interesting, but it does mystify me that otherwise intelligent people take it seriously." Douglas Adams
Studies show they don't cause the damage many parents/scaremonger christian right-wing organisations think they do.
they promote social activity. teamwork (if you choose to work in a team), timing and accuracy. plus they're actually a lot of fun
most studies show only the already screwed up kids use them as target practice for the real deal.
