Best Buy - What's in the Box?

    Seriously....WTF.

After making the return and purchasing a new one, the manager then took it back from him, saying that he had to take it up with the manufacturer.

    Saw this on digg.com

Apparently the guy went back to the best buy, traded it in for a different one after explaining the ordeal, and after purchasing the NEW one, the manager stole it from him saying he had to take it up with Western Digital. Western Digital redirected him back to Best Buy saying that it wasn't their problem.

I suppose the big question is Why were tiles in that box in the first place? as a display?

Don't American stores open and check the contents of boxes before selling them?

When purchasing electronics they show you what is in the box here and if something like a DVD-player they also turn it on to check it is working. In this case it is clearly a mistake from both sides. The customer ought have checked before leaving the store and so should the store have before putting it in the shelf.

doesnt happen much here in the states. We expect the sellers to act responsibly and of course it doesnt always happen. But I have also seen people open boxes to make sure everything is in its right place only to put it back and buy an unopened package.

Sounds to me like someone at the mfct. wanted a free drive and slipped in a replacement into the box. To me, it's the store's duty to handle customer service since they deal directly with the consumer and make it right. And then turn around and see what the deal is with the supplier or even drop their services. There are plenty of places to buy stuff like this so it's important to keep up good customer service.

My theory as to how the tiles got there: Someone purchased the hard drive, took it home, removed the hard drive, and put the tiles in (to give the box some weight). Then they took it back to the store and returned it for a full refund, hoping that the clerk wouldn't bother to open the box and verify that the hard drive was in fact still there. The returned "product" was placed back on the store shelf. Result: One unscrupulous thief with a free hard drive and one customer with a box of worthless tile.

This has happened to my dad twice but both times he went right back to the store with the recipt and showed them what was in the box and they exchanged it for what he actually bought. This sounds like the manager is a dick.

Another theory is I knew a kid who worked at a Best Buy and used to steal Xbox 360s and put the empty boxes back, so I suppose that could have happened except that the employee put tiles in so that it was weighted.

Best Buy is full of sh*t. My friend bought a car stereo and once we opened the box, the stereo was completely damaged, scratched, missing pieces, and it even had a parking ticket inside.... We tried to return it about an hour after it was purchased and they refused to do so.

Ever since, me and my family have spent thousands in electronics in Circuit City and Brandsmart while we have a Best Buy across the street (my dad's house and my house both have BB right next to us)...

Off the top of my head:
    - $3000 Hitachi TV
    - $1000 Digimate Plasma
    - $250 Ipod
    - $50 Altec Lansing System
    - $900 Sony Vaio
    - $1200 Toshiba Laptop
    - $100 HP Printer
    - $400 PDA

Etc... and God knows how many keyboards, CDs, PC Mouses, DVDs, Movies, etc etc.... software, etc..

Just because of a $289 Stereo.

    F*ck you Best Buy.

If that were to happen, shouldn't the drive have an "Open Item" sticker on it?

If the store didn't even put that on then that particular Best Buy must have been really crappy.

I don't really buy much from my local Best Buy. It's usually just DVDs, a couple of PS2 games, and Wii accessories (nunchuck).

I don't think Best Buy is that bad, but then again I haven't made any significant purchases.

Round where I live, there's a Circuit City as well, so if anything I could just go there. There used to be The Wiz too. That closed down a long time ago though.
