safe or free? free. id rather be able to fight for my own safety than be safe but have no freedom.
whats the reason behind this?
just to illustrate the dilemma: It is generally accepted that under the rule of the Soviet Union people were not free. However, I have spoken many people in the new independent, free, states that preferred the old situation, being not free, but having free education, free health care, free kindergartens etc...

i think i'm living in a compromise right now, and i can see dangers by going with either.
i.e., to be safe i'd have to give up some rights and activities i currently enjoy, but to be free i'd be able to partake of some things denied to me now at the cost of safety presumably.
it's a hard choice and i can't vote til i've experienced either, although definately leaning towards free (if current compromise is not available!)

I prefer having the illusion of both. I'm an American.

Freedom is inherent. It is a state of mind, not a condition imposed by government or society.
no reason, just thought it would be an interesting thought exp to discuss, we don't get too many philosophical polls or threads 'round here
keep in mind that choosing freedom basically means living under constant threat of danger, thus, requiring considerable defense capabilities, but the thought exp regression is infinite, for (extremely hypothetical) example, if you are free you can "build your" defense system of choice
what i mean is, consider them to be opposites.
Neither.
As some said, freedom is just a state of mind. Look at America. We've got so many restrictions and monitoring for our own safety and to ensure our freedoms. I'm sure most of you see the irony of both.

I'd love to be free in a mental sense.

Theres little joy to be had from a life with no freedom isn't there?
