Today i removed all the piston rings (thats a shit job) and pulled out the crank. In the process bought a "wrecker bar" which is just the coolest name for a tool
Pics to come

How were the main bearings? Does the crank need to be turned?

Sweet as, they look very very good with only the front two upper bearings having any easily noticeable wear. its very smooth and consistent wear though, nothing unusual which is good so I should be right to get new bearingand put her back in

Sounds like its all go blue, are you installing new rings and main/bigend bearings or going oversize pistons etc. Are you taking the block, crank to a machine shop to get them checked over for sizing etc ?. Is there a noticeable lip at the top of the bore and has the bore still got visible cross hatching ?

Neg on the cross hatching so it will be getting honed. Doesnt have any lip either. It does look in good nick. New rings and bearings as i dont have the $$$ to go for new forged stuff. With the right tune though she'll all the way up to 7000rpm so thats still acceptable.
Ill be doing the size checking myself. Ive just nabbed the tools i need to go over everything today.

Sounds good mate, forgiesa re a bit of a waste unless you runnin g heaps of boost a good set of standard slugs will be fine. 7000rpm is a nice safe limit.
having fun mate ?, I hate working on the wifes car but can spend hours working on the rolla. Cant wait to get home from this work trip as the new garage will be up and the rolla will have a home

Yeh im enjoying it so far. Gives a good sense of accomplishment when youve done something and moved on to the next step. Now im up to a $$$ spending part where other people do the work (honing, head etc) which will be frustrating but what can you do?

So I got a bit more done on the weekend, bought some tools (including my personal favorite, the wrecking bar!) I have compiled my parts list that needs to be acquired... oh dear...
Pics in sequence of comments
The underside of my block. The crank is locked in. Main cap bolts removed, theyre torqued to about 70ft/b so a bit of arm was used to get em out,
At this stage my halogen light died so relying on phone flash 3 main caps are out but the remaining two are special and have to be removed differently. Enter the wrecking bar! you place a block of scrap on the side of the block and jimmy up on the screwed in bolt to lift the main cap out of the middle and rear and voila! also removed the timing chain and oil thingo on the front the of the crank.
Now she's gone! main bearing journals are removed and inspected, very minimal or no wear making me think this has been pulled apart recently or babied for its life.
my nicely cleaned pistons, now to pull out the rings (OMG WHAT A BITCH!)
as you can see, not all were compliant... using thumbs sucks, ill def be using a ring tool for re-installation of new ones.
So ive done up a shopping list.
- timing and bottom end gaskets
- conrod bolts
- main bearings
- con rod bearings
- crankshaft main seal
- water pump
- oil pump
- core plugs
- flywheel bolts
- moly piston rings
- new timing chain, sprocket, tensioner and covers
- front cover seals
- thermostat
- oil pressure gauge sender
- oil pressure gauge
- head bolts
So nothing too dramatic... :P
