19th Annual Burn Prevention Foundation Concours

May 31 to June 1st saw the 19th Annual Burn Prevention Eastern US Concour d'Elegance roll into Bethlehem PA. I was asked to judge and photograph the event.

The wine tour drive on Saturday took a hit from the rainy weather. A few brave souls brought out the vintage iron including a Hurst Special GTO convertible, a lovely vintage Bentley, a 51 english Ford V-8 Pilot Shooting Brake and a 54 Vincent Black Shadow.

This was a great start to what would become a very fun weekend.

Saturday night there was a 50's themed party/fundraiser with silent auction. The food was excellent and the automotive related items were fun to look at. Ed Hermann was the featured speaker. He is an actor with hundreds of shows on his resume. He is also a real automotive enthusiast.

Outside there were a few notable cars such as a 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Skiff, a 1937 AC 16-80 Sports Tourer and a spectacular Bugatti Veyron. I didn't get to drive it but I did get to sit in it! It was a rather tight fit but once you are in, you become one with the wonderful instrumentation and gear lever.

The rains of Saturday gave way to a perfect, sunny day. The field survived the deluge and the cars were able to park without too any problems.

I judged the originals and debutante class. I'll post more on that later. Let's just get into some of the fine machinery that hit the field. As you can see, there were some heavy hitters in the field.

This batch shows some of the motorcycles that were on display. There are 2 shots of the 1911 Er Thomas. It was a beautiful machine with wooden rims and a leather belt.

Some of you will recognize this car from a previous thread of mine. Its a custom built 1929 Duesenberg Model J Skiff. The owner aquired the chassis. He found the duesy motor in a hot rod in California. He then found Mr Northport, former designer for Duesenberg, to design the car. The first 2 attempts at using laminates failed. It wasn't until some skilled boat builders stepped in, created an ash frame and used mahagony on top. This one didn't fall into the moat, it worked with IMHO, beautiful results.

That is a beautiful Duesy, but from your point of view as a judge, how do you assess that? What class did it participate in? Do you by any chance have the engine and chassis number, because those seem to be original Duesenberg.

Its hard to say how to correctly judge this car. On one hand its a work of art, lovingly hand crafted to the design of Mr Northport, former designer of Duesenbergs. One must keep in mind that a vast majority of the Duesenbergs were coach built back in the day. But this one was hand crafted many years after the fact.

I know it took the podium at Pebble Beach several years ago. I'm trying to track down which class/award that was. As you know, the Pebble Beach folks are pretty tough.

At the Bethlehem show it was in the wooden bodies category. I believe it took home a ribbon, just not quite sure if it was a judges choice or class winner.

So in a very wishy washy way, it would depend on what class the car was in and what the judging standard is for that particular show. And then there always are the judges choices and other awards to be given out.

Unfortunately, I don't have the chassis number.

The theme of the concours was the tailfin. As such, there was a very nicde selection of cars from the 50s.

Sounds perfectly fine to me, I doubt it was ever available commercially. Nevertheless, it is a very beautiful example of craftsmanship.

oh it's adorable for sure, but I'm wondering about the manufacturer
