Well in the court room it can remove all doubt.

30+ years ago we were doing the same !
Through my fault, destroyed the front end of a "top of the range" Hunter - brand new, just off the transporter, not sold. One week later it was back on the new cars sales forecourt and went to a new owner who was oblivious to it all

That would involve removeing every idiot from working in workshops which will severly whittle down their staff to next to nothing lol.
I agree fully if i was bouncing it would of made it so easy if drunken idiots either behaved themselves or simply didnt exist but then again the job wouldent exist if it wasnt for them......
Lol matra we had a apprentice back into a very large industrial hoppa so bad it tipped onto a new astra which damaged the side/roof (roof happened when the lid hit it) ruining the back end of the commadore and not doing any favors for the astras roof...the commadore was fine that was fixed no worries he had to sell the astra as a hail damage car though

I always take a photo of my odometer before i put it into ANY workshop. If there more then 2 extra kays on it ill question it.
The Datto will rage again...
It's easy to tell most of you have never worked in a car dealership, especially a service department.
Driving a car is a major part of diagnosing and fixing a problem with a car. A lot of today's concerns are NVH, and driveability concerns. Many of these are intermittent, too. I've seen techs spend 2 hours trying to duplicate a concern. It is not always easy to do. Then after the problem is fixed, the tech has to verify that the problem is in fact taken care of. And in the case of a MIL, readiness has to be set on the vehicle before you can verify that the concern is gone. This can take up to 45 minutes of driving depending on the car and all the monitors it has to go through.
Even simple things can take a while to reset. TPMS lights on VWs require 2 miles at a constant 35+ mph to reset. That isn't easy to do in city traffic, so the closest interstate was usually used. And the round trip for the nearest exit was 7 miles.
This probably isn't the case here; I don't know what service he was having done and I don't think the article said what it was. But there are a lot of times that driving a car is necessary- hell, even for PA state inspection it's required to put at least one mile on the car.
Shit like this gives all techs a bad name. And this kind of thing doesn't happen nearly as often as you'd think. Most techs have no interest in your 4 cylinder Camry automatic when they're only getting paid .3 hours to change your oil and do a 30 point inspection. You and your car aren't as important as you think you are. Really.
