That's the plan. He got it as part of a "Ride your bike to work" Green initiative at the Uni he works at. Any member of staff who bought a new bike got a certain percentage of the cost paid for out of some kind of government funding. Not sure if he's actually ridden it in to Uni yet, I think he's worried about it getting nicked!

do you know what group the bike has been fitted with?
Condor Cycles Fratello - Steel Audax Road Bike
turn this link a couple of pages and you'll see what I mean.

Sorry, I haven't got a clue. I know the bike cost in the region of £1000 so I'd guess either the Shimano 105 or the Campagnolo Veloce judging by the prices on that brochure.

What you may be thinking of as normal is (I think) a single pivot design, like this?

Most entry and mid-level bikes have that style (my bike is one of the more expensive bikes equipped with a single pivot style rear suspension, just a little more gets you a more sophisticated design). The second most popular style is a Horst-link style, like this:

Which is a four-link, same thing. Then different companies have slight variations on the basic suspensions that result in slightly different feel and compression ratios, but for the most part; single-pivot = slightly sloppy cornering, anything more = smooth. Next bike will either be a Horst-link style or a completely rigid single speed, not sure.

Yeah, I don't have that worry, on the days I don't drive to college, I reckon theives would get about 200yard with my bike before bringing it back! It's so bashed up and heavy.

It's a racing class for sailboats, but in this case it refers to the 29" wheels, as opposed to 26".

Yeah that was pretty good. Here are some videos to keep you entertained.
I've ridden the first trail in this video, Karate Monkey, probably some others too, but it's pretty cool to see these guys riding them.
YouTube - The Collective - Seasons (Last Section)

YouTube - Ryan leech - The collective

    I could beat this guy.
YouTube - Sam Hill downhill world championship 2008 insane ride

I love the whole Collective collection. For the riders, there's only one word, respect!
I had a look at some dirt jumps yesterday and I think they're pretty scary
    But one day...
As for now I'll stick to what Sam Hill does best

What kind of riding are you into my porsche?

I own ROAM and The Collective, I'll probably get Seasons, I've heard it's just as epic.

Well I like downhill the best, but since where I live it's pretty flat I mostly ride trails/XC. I rode Whistler this summer though, that was awesome, and I've done some cross country type stuff when I was first getting into biking in Colorado and Montana.

a bit of change in subject, but for all the iphone/ipod touch users out there, there is an app called trailguru, and it will record your ride giving you speed, avg speed, max speed, distance covered, climb and decent, and time.

the cool part is you can upload it to a server, then download a kml to open in google earth and have your entire ride saved. very cool little program

I took my dad's bike on a 5ish mile ride. It's the first time I've ridden a pure road bike (a Univega I think?). I've renamed it "nutsmasher", because not only did it have an extremely uncomfortable seat, the lack of soft-offroad suspension was evident over every little crack in the road. However it is about 15kilos lighter than my bike and on strait flat roads I was going a helluva lot quicker than I could on my mountain bike. The spots for you shoes were annoying as I could never get my feet back in ,while moving, after stopping.

Hmmm having these would go down nicely with me..
