That makes too much sense perhaps.
No offense intended, but having the viewpoint that making guns illegal will stop criminal people from having them is, quite plainly, ridiculous. Why don't we just make a law against guns and explosives in Iraq and all live happily ever after? Or make a law against shooting at people...

No legislature will take guns away from criminals. And thus people who legitimately buy guns should not have to deal with responses like that.

Criminals will always have weapons. However if you make guns illegal, the plain fact that they have them is illegal. We have the nice legal position that people can be put behind bars for illegal possession of arms...and that goes for everybody with a gun (except for hunters with a legal permit to own a shot gun), we don't have to wait until they commit a crime....

And how do you know they have a gun until it's pulled out and used, or threatened to be used? Which is reason to jail someone in my country too. So how exactly does a gun law take guns out of the hands of people who misuse them?

The fact that there are far less guns circulating (because they are illegal) already greatly reduces the chance that you will meet somebody carrying one....

In the end of the day, guns will always be readily available to those who are willing to put in the effort to buy them. Even in England, guns are become increasingly common amongst criminals, despite the nation's supposedly stringent gun laws. Also, here's something else to mull over, fact: there is at least one ak47 for
every hundred people on the planet. And that's only one kind of gun, so the point is, guns are, and always will be, everywhere.

Europe is so much more civilized. You're welcome for those guns we sent back in the forties.

Especially when you have people saying things like 'I am so excited i get to pick up my gun next week', does everyone treat them like toys?

When we had a school shooting in the 90's hand guns were baned, even though there are shootings now if that hadn't happened I am sure there would be many more.
    How are you sure?

My girlfriend just picked up a few DVDs of a CBS show called Jericho. It's about a small midwest town after several large nuclear bombs go off in America, basically turning it into a post apocalyptic world. In the one episode, a group of Blackwater-like mercenaries on a "military" mission attempt to raid the town. They are turned back by a bunch of farmers with hunting rifles and shotguns. I know it's a weird example, but it makes the point clear.

You willing to take that chance? Tell me how it feels when you're breathing from a hole in your chest from some guy's illegal .45. Same goes for anyone who puts their faith in the police. You go ahead and call them. They'll be there. As soon as they can. Really.

but that's no reason to facilitate buying them, is it? It is all in the effort, and if the effort has to be substantial, proliferation will be become less.

    None taken.

But that's not my viewpoint. I never said "stop". I'm rather thinking "reduce". Take a look at your friendly neighbours in the North. The firearm death rate in the US is 10.0, while in Canada it's 4.78. It's still high here, but more than half of your death rate anyway. Why? Because our media don't make us believe we need a gun to protect our families from gangsters/burglars/maniacs who want to raid our houses during the night. The god damned patriotic attitude attitude in the US doesn't help too.

I will never ever criticize somebody for buying a gun as a weapon to hunt, it's perfectly legal and a lot of people do it. I also wouldn't mind an enthusiast buying one for his collection. But for "protecting myself"... I don't have your mentality, sorry. Can't understand the ****ing purpose.

whats the rate of "gangsters/burglars/maniacs" raiding houses during the night in Canada compared to America?

Couldn't find a proper stat list, if anybody finds one it would be interesting to share.

I have no idea, honestly. Probably lower, but I don't know by how much.

The death rate of people breaking into my house needs to be 100%.

I like things that are loud and scary. Some day I'd like to own a couple pieces. I don't hunt, I don't plan on starting. But to go to a range and empty a few magazines sounds like a good way to spend an afternoon. But I do understand the home protection angle. There are some not so friendly people in this world.

Not really. At the point you unlawfully enter my house, you are saying "I don't value my life." I value my life. I value my family's life. An intruder's? Not so much.

What about holding at gunpoint until the police arrives whoever breaks into your house if you are to use your beloved gun?

Isn't it more sensible than shoot first, ask questions later?
