BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Shoes hurled at President Bush

President Bush ducked out of harm's way when a reporter threw his shoes at him during his farewell trip to Iraq.

The man, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Iraqi-owned Al-Baghdadiya television based in Egypt, shouted "this is the end" as he hurled them at the American leader.

The moment was captured from different camera angles and shows the president's reaction afterwards.

Seriously though, where in god's name were the secret service? they took a good 5 seconds before they were anywhere near protecting the president......It was actually fellow journalists who held the guy down.....

EDIT: would this be a huge insult in an Islamic culture? I read somewhere that it's incredibly rude to expose the soles of your shoes in such a culture.....

That shoe could have held a knife, plastic explosives....I can dream.

What I find weird about it, besides what you listed, is the fact that this guy was a legitimate journalist and not just some random guy in the street. Come to think of it though, if Bush got hit in the face with a shoe it would probably be hilarious.

Do you recall how Iraqi's were wiping their shoes on Saddam's statue when it was toppled early in the invasion? There's hardly a lower insult than that in the region.
