It's currently drying after the 4th coat of clear. You're the paint guy, if I have a few runs in the clear coat, I should be able to wet sand them out and then put another few coats of clear, sand that, then buff it right?

Go to a body shop supply store and pick up a paint planer,

and some 1200 and 3000 sand paper. Use the paint planer to file down the high area of the run. The paint planer makes it so you only take down the high, and not the clear around it. Then sand it smooth with the sand paper. Then try buffing it. If you don't break through the clear, you shouldn't have to re apply the clear.

I just used 600 to shave the run down. Then 1000 wet, 2000 wet, Poorboy's SSR2.5, and PB SSR 1. The guitar's neck pocket and other bare wood areas soaked up some water so I'm letting that dry then I will wax and glaze it and take some pictures. Then comes the fun part...wiring.

The pictures make the few spots of iffy finish much more noticeable. I'm debating sanding it again to get them out. Keep in mind this is without wax or glaze, so the swirl marks you see will not be visible and probably some of the spottiness will go away as well, along with being much more shiny. I'm at least going to wax it before I decide whether I need to sand more or not. Definitely some kinks in the clearcoat process to work out. I might have an auto body shop clear the next one for me.

I would sand it a little to get any nibs off and then put more clear on it to try to fill in the grain of the wood. That would make it look extra smooth. Don't wax it or anything before clearing again as it would lead to adhesion problems. As for the body shop clearing it, I don't think it'd look good as clear applied with a spray gun is very very thin also, there might be an issue with adhesion.

Well I've run into a problem. Sanding and stuff I noticed that on the lower horn hear where the neck meets the body there was a spot with little to no glue (I have no clue how, I must have used half a bottle of glue!) and with the wet sanding and rinsing...it separated a little bit... So I'm going to let it dry and use a syringe to shoot some epoxy into the gap then clamp it. I guess I'll spray more clear too? This was 4 coats. I guess it could use 6 or so. Then won't I have to sand all over again though?

Just remember to smooth the clear that is on it now before reclearing. What does this clear consist of? Is there a reducer?

It's pre-mixed, I could mix in some reducer if I wanted, but the can says pre-mixed no need for reducing.

I was gonna say, if you could reduce it more it might lay out better so you don't have to sand it after you clear it.

Really? That would be awesome...do I need to buy some special reducer or is it just paint thinner?

I don't know. It'd be best to bring the box with you to a paint supply store and ask them what they think. What kind of product is it?

Yeah I put more clear on, it looks amazing. I'll polish and wax it tomorrow afternoon and then of course add pictures. I'm very pleased.

Well. Almost done. Sprayed more lacquer and then sanded and polished.

I love these types of projects. It takes me back my high school days when I stained and finished custom cabinets for four years; not that that was very long ago.

You guitar looks great, fantastic job!

It looks so much better now. The way the pics show, it seems like the grain filled in nicely and its smooth now. Nice job colin.

Yeah it would have been a huge mistake to leave it like the first round of "finished" pictures.

Whenever my dad gets home he's going to help me wire it. I hope it makes sound when we're done. My dad is a genius though so I'm sure he will know how to do it.
