    Engines Referred To As "Motors."

Does it bother you when people call what is obviously an engine in a car a "motor?"

It really irritates me. Even some car magazines will say something like "the Chevy motor was in its second year..."

Even a 10-year-old boy knows that cars have internal combustion engines, not "motors." Not including cars like hybrids and electric cars, of course.

I can't believe that some professionals and experts use a term which is so inaccurate.

So, if it bothers you (or not) vote here!

According to dictionary.com, not a whole lot.

A motor can be an ICE.

One big difference... engines run on gasoline (or diesel); motors don't.

When I first heard it, it sounded awkward, but now it seems pretty normal.

In my mind it is a terminology that is used by people who know more than the average person on the topic.

It sounds like one of the thing engineers use to feel superior than other people.
No, it doesn't bother me, it's pretty irrelevant actually, much worst misconceptions going on to care about.

    That is just misinformation...

A motor can run on any energy be it fuel or electricity or any other form of energy. I am not sure what you are getting irritated about?

Sounds to me like you just misunderstood the concept?

Think about it. The word "engine" first came into being to describe external combustion steam engines... Not to describe petrol or diesel burning motors.

That and you tend to fill your "Engine" with "Motor" -oil.

Power, whether measured as HP, PS, or KW is what accelerates cars and gets it up to top speed. Power also determines how far you take a wall when you hit it
    Engine torque is an illusion.

now that I think about it, in Italian there is just the equivalent of "motor" (motore), and that applies to whatever kind of machine which provides the power/torque and allows the motion of an "operating" machine.

    More importantly, you are back.

I can't be bothered either, altough I prefer engine.

Yeah, I don't really mind. The context of the description clears it up anyway. Most cars don't have motors in it anyway(for the time being), so just assuming it's an ICE should be good enough for now.

Another 50+ years or so though, when alternative technology catches up with current engine technology (be it hydrogen or electric) should be a bit more confusing.

On a side note, I favor hydrogen. What say you?
