    Trade In

So i was just wondering, what happens when you trade in your car to a dealer?
We've been thinking about trading in our 2001 highlander for a 2008 model. What do they do when they get it? Sometimes I know they fix it up a little then resell it but what happens if they don't do that? Does it get shipped to another area where it would sell better? or do they send it to another country and sell it there like a 3rd world country. Which would they do to make the most amount of money? I'm really interested in what happens when you sign your car over to a dealer. Anybody know?

They usually bring them to an auction and used car dealers/ private parties buy them.

Large used car lots buy them. Or if the dealership thinks its a good car they could just sell it on the lot.

a good dealer never loses money

If you switch the negotiation from trade-in to cash then you see the "real" value the dealer has on the car. You'll pay less with cash. The delta is the cost to the dealer of sellling/passing-on the car.

US car sales are unliek the UK and so the rule-of-thumb here won't apply.

3rd World countries usually have enough high/middle class people to collect their own fleet of used cars... Plus shipping a 2001, worn out, high-mileage highlander to let's say... South America, would take a good US $3000 perhaps? Imagine the needed markup just to make some profit out of it.

Go to KBB or NADA's website. Then compare the trade in value to the retail value. You'll see where the profit is. I sold my old car on autotrader for almost 3 times what the dealer offered me.

I have been in a US version of a Camry in Astana (Kazakhstan) and a US version of a Subaru Outback in the Kyrgyz Republic....cars go all over the world. Many European cars are driven to that area, while Japanese (RHD) cars are brought in via China in container trains.
