    Car Repair Gripes

    If you are working on your car, and see something stupid, put it up here.

    So, Honda has been making cars for close to 50 years now, and they couldn't find a better place to put a starter motor than underneath the intake manifold and on top of the CV Axle? Now I need to take off the right front wheel. URG

    Got my mother in law's Volvo which needs a new starter. You can see the darn thing, but to replace it you need to take off the intake tubing and airbox to actually get it out of there.

    Oh, and here's another one. When I had my Bronco, it drove me nuts because half the fasteners were metric, and the other half were SAE. And then there were lots of those stupid torx fasteners. Great truck but that made things a little difficult to work on. A shame since it would otherwise have been a breeze, lots of room to work with. Didn't even have to jack it up to change the oil!

    Speaking of oil changes, my Mom's Mazda3 requires you to remove the entire lower engine cover to perform this service.

    Tuning the mechanical fuel injection on the shop BMW 2002 we had in high school was nearly impossible.

    The Honda recommended way is to remove the intake. I ended up taking off the right wheel and using 2 feet worth of extensions to get that mother out of their. I was fumbling around a good 20 minutes trying to get the socket on the upper bolt.

    How about the battery placement in the Chrysler LH series cars? In the fender well!

    I think it was the Renault Megane that you had to go in through the wheel well to change a headlight bulb.

    Iirc the Alfa 164 originally shipped with an oil filter they decided was too small.

    There was a hole in the inner guard through which to extract it.

    When they went to a bigger filter they didn't change the size of the hole.

    As a result you either increased the size of the hole (in a crumple zone, and near the suspension pivot), or dropped the entire engine to perform the oil change...

    On my old Crown Vic, they ran the brake lines up against the frame so after a while they just rubbed through. One morning i went out to start it and the pedal went to the floor!

    Also, the spark plugs were smack dab in the middle so you couldn't come up from underneath and it was a pain in the ass to get them out from above

    The Matra Bagheera had twin webers on top of the engine and access to the mid engine was via a hatch in the top which was barely 12" by 18". So even taking the carbs off was a nightmare involving part dismantling in situ. To do ANYTHING on the engine even adjust the fan belt required the carbs to come off to get enough room to work

    Why taking off the right wheel? I mean isn't there any other alternate?

    How about thse cars (Toyota in some cases as well as Chrysler) where the fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump assembly. Grr.

    And a lot of the 4WD trucks (Toyota comes to mind again) where the wheel bearing is built into the hub, so you have to buy the entire $100-something hub rather than a $10 bearing.

    Both cases of normally cheap and easy repairs made more costly and difficult...

    Pontiac Grand Am's have such poor headlight placement that when I worked at the auto parts store it was one of the only cars we simply flat out refused to change bulbs out on. You can't access the durn things!

    How about a GM W-Body with the battery underneath the rear seats? Or the those same cars with monoleaf springs front and rear that need special (as in expensive) tools to remove and install? Pain in the ass, amirite?
