The current block has 180,000 miles on it. I'm not putting any money into it. Sunday my coworker will be dropping off my OBD1 ABA, totally complete. Engine, intake, airbox, wiring harness. The whole deal. Soon as it's here I'm going to start tearing it down.

Plans are lots of headwork, re-ring the pistons, lighten/knife edge the crank, 8000rpm capable. Spin it 7200 daily. 3.94R+P 2Y close ratio trans with a .75 TDI 5th for highway cruising. And I may punch it over a little. But probably not.

OBD1 has forged rods and pistons from the factory. Also has oil squirters for the piston skirts. The head and cam also flow much better stock, along with dual valve springs.

It's a lot beefier motor. The OBD2 engines only retain the forged rods.

Quiggs, your car looks great. Good luck with all the work you are doing to the car.

    Thanks.

Mike dropped off my engine/associated parts about an hour ago. I had no idea how complete this thing was. Belts are still on it, PS pump, AC compressor, everything. I have about 4 boxes of body and engine harness. It's crazy.

    Tear down should commence shortly.

Took off the intake manifold, fuel rail and injectors, oil cooler, all the water hoses, alternator, power steering pump, and a ton of other stuff tonight.

Only things left on it are the flywheel, distributor, exhaust manifold, and crank pulley with timing stuff. I stripped 2 of the allens holding the crank pulley on so I'll have to get those off carefully.

Plugs were black. This thing ran pig rich for a long time. Oddly though, the intake runners in the head were clean and the tops of the valves were nearly spotless.

Can't wait to get this thing open!
