Yeah a great read! It's written by someone who campaigned both in the 1980s/90s.

Nice car! Fell in love with it ever since I saw them racing in the Bathurst 1000 races (speciall the one driven by Steve Soper - I'm a great fan of his). Loved the car so much I even bought several 1/24 scale kits of it.

Met one on the street years ago, it had like 3-4 people in it and I was driving a Bimmer 323i (alone) and it still blew me away

Steve Soper's car around Bathurst...it was certainly the peak of the championship...as when De Adamich has driven his GTA on the old Nurburgring....Nostalgia is nostalgia.

I talked to a guy at a motor show in Sydney last year who had one. There are several road going RS and RS500s in Australia. The RS sells for around $30,000 and the RS500 a little more.
Some of the old Group A racers still exist. Dick Johnson still has one or more of his.
Two Sierras officially won at Bathurst - in 1988 and 89.
The 1989 Bathurst 1000 winning car that Johnson and Bowe drove is on display at DJRs headquarters in Queensland.
The 1988 Bathurst 1000 winning car of Tony Longhurst and Thomas Mezera is on display at the Bathurst motor racing museum.
As for the Eggenburger Sierra of Steve Soper and Pierre Dieudonne that was first across the line in 1987 but later disqualified - I haven't heard anything about where that car ended up. It would be interesting to know since it is one of the more interesting/controversial "winning" cars from Bathurst history, and it would probably be worth something in Australia now.

You would have seen the 1988 Bathurst winner then FPV - quite a valuable car now, so I guess that's why you weren't allowed to sit in it.
The Volvo would have been the 1997 850 Super Tourer which finished 4th in the 97 Bathust 1000.
Well, the Sierras were producing over 600 bhp by 1992 - from a 2.0 litre engine. The turbo could run plenty of boost. The DJR car in 1992 weighed in at 1150kg, so not only did they have similar power to a modern V8 Supercar, they weighed less. The drivers used to say that it was like driving a 100 bhp shopping trolley below 5000 rpm and an F1 car above 5000 rpm, such was the uneven delivery of the power. They were super hard on their rear tyres. I remember John Bowe saying they were getting wheel spin in 6th gear on Conrod straight... which makes you wonder just how little traction the thing had.
A few years ago at the Melbourne Grand Prix there was a mock race between the 1989 DJR Sierra and the 1987 Brock Commodore. Steve Johnson got a steer for the first time in the car that gave his father two ATCC titles (1988 & 89). He mused about how fast the RS500 would be given today's tyres, electronics and suspension tuning knowhow.
Johnson's pole lap at Bathurst in 1992 was 2m12.5, compared to Murphys 2m6.9 in 1993. I do wonder how close to the V8 Supercar times a Sierra would come given the technology of today.

Here's a couple of attachments of the DJR Sierra (bottom) and the controversial 1987 Eggenburger Sierra (top).

What was the redline of the Sierra's, anywhere near the V8's 7500rpm? If so, 5000-7500 would still be fairly useful if you were pretty liberal in the gear shifting. But certainly something lighter than the current cars would prove beneficial around Bathurst

A friend of mine has a big power cossie engine (thinks its 550+bhp) in a MK2 escort rally car shell, and it redlines at 8000rpm, but I think the touring cars produced peak power at 7500rpm

<sighs> Wish Ford brought something like that to the US. I would love to have that RS500.
