i would say RWD most of the time but 4WD would be better on occasions

IMO Rear wheel drive on tarmac, 4wd on loose surfaces and FWD nowhere 4WD gets you off the line quicker but normally RWD will do better the rest of the way. I believe RWD is better for cornering.
jeremey clarkson was driving the murcielago and he said since it is 4wd you have to go slower off the line, i was like what? what did he mean i thought it was the oppositeOriginally Posted by :Exige:

dont RWD getr you off the line Quicker?

4WD has gets off the line fastest because it uses all four wheels for maximum traction, but during acceleration, weight shifts to the rear, wasting part of the power a 4WD sends to the front wheels, so RWD is better after the start
but isnt thet what you dont want? with maximum traction the wheels dont spin a little and the tires dont get to heat up a bitOriginally Posted by Bob

RWD also usually corners better than 4WD because accelerating while turning in a 4WD car means less of the traction can be applied to cornering, while a RWD car doesnt use any front wheel traction to accelerate
Drive an Audi RS6 then youll know what all wheels can do..Originally Posted by MRR

Best for performance?
Front wheel drive is the best solution when you have a small car, or want to maximise cabin space.
It is also quite a good idea since the defining handling characteristic is understeer, so when everyday people encounter a problem at a corner, they can just wind on more lock, which is easier and more intuitive than trying to wind on the correct ammount of opposite lock - which takes practice. Fine if you practice, but backwards into a tree for most people.
All wheel drive offers the best possible opportunity for traction, but in terms of ultimate performance it is too heavy.
Rear wheel drive is technically the best solution, because it is the most logical, and simplest set up.
I suppose that awd is better in most situations though, despite its technical inadequacies, as you can go faster in less than perfect conditions.
Thanks for all the fish
Did you meant to say "rear" when you said "REAL wheel drive" and if so.. insn't aren't AUDI only front or AWD driven?Originally Posted by 6'bore

That is given Quattro has been around for 25 years and it is getting better and better, the new Quattro system will have 60/40Originally Posted by 6'bore

Adaptable AWD could be the solution. A special system that could switch entirely to RWD, FWD, or AWD depending on the situation.
it wouldnt change the fact there are awd components on the car, the weight doesnt automatically disappear, by changing it to fwd or rwd u essentially take away all the advantages of the system while leaving the faultsOriginally Posted by MRR
