    Audi R8 swansong...

It's official, Audi's legendary R8 racingcar is to have it's final race at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut on Saturday July 1st.

    From Autoblog.com:

On Saturday, July 1st the Audi R8 will make its final racing appearance at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut. Audi has been running the R8 here in the States for the American Le Mans Series while the new diesel-powered R10s were preparing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Now that Le Mans is over the R10s will be debuting in the American Le Mans Series soon.

But not before this special R8 takes to the track for the last time. The Audi R8 has an incredible 62 wins in 79 races to date, which includes five 24 Hours of Le Mans victories. The car racing at Lime Rock Park will be wearing a special design that includes the names of all 18 drivers who won a race with the R8 and the names of the 23 tracks worldwide on which an R8 won. Chances are it'll find its way to the winners circle on July 1st – the R8 is unbeaten at Lime Rock Park with three victories.

What about that Champion Audi I heard was now owned by a private team, and was caught racing with what looked like Daytona Prototypes (or was it classic race cars?).

Or is this the same R8?
Anyways, farewell to such a magnificent car. No doubts here that Audi's R10 will carry on the success.

I heard a rumour that Le Mans will be introducing a new rule next year that all competing cars will have to have closed cockpits.

Don't know how true that is, but if it is you have to wonder whether the R10 will reach the same success. Audi will probably create a brand new racer, than again, they might transform the R10 into a closed-cockpit car.

Oh, well that's cool. I'd like to see the R10 carry the torch for quite a while still.

I don't see any problem in the closed cars rule. They could just put a roof in the R10. Think of it as the Bentley EXP 8 and the Audi R8 pair.

Lola have released the first designs of the closed cockpit cars. The car is called the B10/10. It looks as though it is based on the B06/10 that is racing in LMP1 form for the first time this year. Still looking for pictures thought.
