    Holden Hurricane Concept

    Holden Hurricane, 1969

This wind-cheating, wedge-shaped, mid-engined experimental car stunned Australian motor show audiences in 1969.

‘Tomorrow’s Holden’ introduced the company’s first Australian designed and built V8 engine. This engine, later fitted to the Monaro and Torana, was Holden’s contribution to the ‘muscle’ cars that characterised Australian motoring in the 1970s.

It’s got what you would hope from a true car of the future — technology just imaginable in 1969 that has become more familiar today: an electronic quick-read digital display; completely foam-padded interior; pedal height adjustable to suit the driver; driver’s seatbelt engine immobiliser; automatic station-seeking radio; rear-vision TV screen; 'pathfinder' automatic route indicator.

Holden very nearly built some interesting cars twice. Had the design and tooling technology of today been available they may have gone ahead.
