    Yes and no. Yes, that switch is part of the way they cause the backfires, but no, that switch isn't a modification to the bikes to make backfires. It's the ignition killswitch that all bikes have. Kills the motor straight away, so you hold the throttle open, turn it off, wait a sec, then turn it back on. The motor catches again, and then boom, headshot.

    A mate used to do similar, had the '63 Holden ute wired up with an additional 7th spark plug into the exhaust pipe. Switch off the ignition while in gear and hold the throttle flat to fill the exhaust system up with petrol fumes, then switch back on and .. BOOM !!!

    2 of my mates blew up their exhausts doing it. One had an old Pajero that rattled more than went bang, the other used to do them in a Valiant Regal with a 265. It made the most almighty booms when it went off.
