He was on his way to a debut victory until the gearstick got unstuck in the closing stages. Lee Mueller in the Huffaker Engineering did manage to score a debut victory that same weekend in Seattle. It proved only a minor set back for Tullius as he would go on to win five races and the regional championship. Mueller scored another two victories in the Huffaker car, making for a total of eight wins in the E-Type's first, truncated season.
More than happy with the car's performance, Tullius brought out the Group 44 E-Type virtually unchanged at the start of 1975 season. He scored a remarkable seven victories bringing the car's tally up to 12 wins out of 17 attempts. Tullius also racked up enough points to clinch the SCCA National Championship. In their few encounters, the Group 44 E-Type also proved to have the better of the Huffaker Engineering E-Type both in terms of outright pace and reliability.
By the end of the 1975 season, the E-Type competition program was abandoned as the production car was replaced by the all-new XJ-S. The competition success of both E-Types had a substantial effect on the demand for the V12-engined sports car in North America and by the end of production all previously unsold cars had found a new owner. Tullius was also awarded for his efforts as he became Jaguar's sole North American competition partner, switching to the XJ-S from 1976 onwards. << Prev Page 2 of 2
