It absolutely dominated the popular Japanese GT championship and also scored outright victories in the Spa 24 Hours and the Bathurst 1000. To homologate a revised aerodynamics package, which fed more air into the intercoolers, a Nismo version was introduced in 1990. Celebrating the huge success on the racing track, Nissan also launched a pair of V-Spec (V for Victory) versions of the GT-R towards the end of the production run. These featured larger wheels and other subtle changes.

In reference to the Skyline's all-conquering success on the racing track, the R32 GT-R quickly received the nickname 'Godzilla.' It achieved further fame as the tuner car of choice thanks to the receptiveness of the sturdy engine to performance upgrades. As a result, bog-standard cars are today relatively hard to find. Strictly right-hand drive and only available in Japan and Australia, the GT-R also achieved cult status in the rest of the world due to the Sony Playstation video game Gran Turismo. In 1995, it was superseded by the more refined R33, which did continue the Skyline's run of racing successes.

Although as fast as most supercars of its era in relatively standard form and boasting an impeccable competition pedigree, the R32 GT-R has yet to become a truly coveted collector car. Perhaps the more serious collectors are wary of being associated with the 'boy racers' that have created wild and loud custom versions. An unmolested example should make for a very interesting prospect and with the R32 GT-R now over 25 years old, it is eligible to be imported to the United States, values of original cars may very well rise rapidly of the next few years.
