The next outing was the Silverstone World Championship round where David Kennedy, Youjirou Terada and Yoshimi Katayama finished ninth overall and first in the GTP class. At Le Mans, the two cars finished 17th and 19th. In the remainder of the season, the cars were only campaigned in Japan with Terada and Kennedy claiming another GTP class victory at Fuji.

For the 1989 season, subtle modifications were made to the existing cars to create the 767B. The most obvious change was a new side-exhaust system. Further improvements were also made to the 767's reliability. This resulted in GTP class wins at Dijon, Le Mans, Brands Hatch, the Nürburgring, Spa and Mexico. Outright victories were still well out of grasp for the Japanese manufacturer.

Mazda stepped up once again ahead of the 1990 season with the introduction of the 787, which featured an all-new four-rotor engine and a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. The 767B continued to be used as a back-up and clinched yet another GTP class victory at Le Mans. One of the three 767Bs was sold to a privateer team and this was campaigned in the Japanese GT Championship for a couple more seasons. With numerous, although often undisputed, GTP class wins, the 767 was the most successful Mazda sports car to date. It was only eclipsed by the subsequent 787B, which won Le Mans outright in 1991.
