Built specifically for competition use, the Sport 5000 ultimately made only one appearance, at the 1966 Mugello 500 km. Roberto Bussinello did not even manage to complete a single lap. Following this disappointing outing, the car was displayed in the DeTomaso museum until Alejandro de Tomaso passed away in 2004. It was subsequently acquired by Paul Grant and has since been sold to an enthusiast in the United States. He brought the car to the 2013 Quail, a Motorsports Gathering along with the reconstructed DeTomaso P70 he also owned at the time.
