Designed under the direction of Kai Sieber, the third generation made its formal worldwide debut on July 16, 2014, having been cooperatively developed with Renault. The new models will be available as the two-seater (internally designated as the C453 build series) and four-seater (internally designated the W453 build series), and will be marketed as the Fortwo and Forfour, respectively. Motor Trend has reported the third generation will share approximately 70% of its parts with the third generation Renault Twingo.
Prior to its debut, Smart CEO Annette Winkler reported the C453 will share its 2.69 meter length with the current W451 build series as well as its trademark hemispherical steel safety cell, marketed as the Tridion cell. The Fortwo will continue to be assembled at Smartville, and the Forfour will be manufactured alongside the Renault Twingo 3 in in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. Smartville, where the W450 and W451 build series have been manufactured, underwent a 200 million euro upgrade beginning in mid-2013, in preparation for the C453 Fortwo.
