Although originally developed for rallying Toyota's turbocharged, 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine also powered some great sports prototype racers. The most successful of these was the Toyota Eagle GTP Mk III. Developed by Dan Gurney's All American Racers, it dominated the IMSA GTP championship during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. At the recent Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion we were treated to the first outing of the most successful chassis of the six built. Raced by Juan Manuel Fangio II during the 1992 and 1993 seasons, it scored over a dozen outright victories including two back-to-back Sebring 12 Hours wins. After the car's contemporary racing career, it was presented to Fangio, who would go on to own the car until 2014. It has since been restored for the current owner and was raced for the first time at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as can be seen in this gallery.
A few weeks earlier, at the Le Mans Classic, we also had the privilege of getting a detailed look at one of just two Toyota 85Cs built. Built by for Toyota by Dome, it was raced at Le Mans in 1985 and this particular car finished 12th overall. It returned to Europe for the first time since its period racing career to compete in the Le Mans Classic and we used this rare opportunity to capture every angle.
