Page 1 of 1 While outwardly similar to the original RT/10 Viper show car, the Viper RT/10 production car has undergone significant upgrades in its lifetime. In fact, both the Roadster and Coupe have been refined to reduce weight, reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. For example, 1996 was a year of major change for the Roadster. Stripes made their first appearance in 1996 giving a not-so-subtle allusion to the Viper's racing heritage.
It also was the first year that the car's exhaust was relocated to rear outlets to improve sound and comfort levels. It was in 1996 that turned to the second chapter in the Viper story with the introduction of the GTS Coupe-crafted in the mold of the world's great Grand Touring cars. Although it shared some of its styling cues with the Roadster, the GTS Coupe was 90 percent brand new. New body, interior, all-new V-10 engine, less weight and more power greeted customers who flocked to dealers to order the car.
In 1996 the Dodge Viper GTS was the pace car for the 80th Indianapolis 500 miles race. Page 1 of 1
