It was created by Apollo Automobil, which was created with the bankrupt assets of Gumpert, with the backing of a Hong Kong businessman. For the the development of Intensa Emozione or intense emotion, the German company partnered with Italian company MAT and German specialists HWA AG.

The car is built around a carbon-fibre composite monocoque, produced by the Capricorn Group, who also supplied the tubs for the Porsche 919 program. This was developed with the help of MAT, which was headed by Paolo Garella. Racing inspired double wishbone suspension is fitted on all four corners with three-way adjustable Bilstein dampers. Stopping power is provided by Brembo carbon-fibre composite brakes.

Power is provided by Ferrari F12Berlinetta based engine that was further refined by Autotecnica Motori and HWA AG. The modified 6.3-litre engine was tweaked to produce 780 bhp and 760 Nm of torque, which represents an increase of 50 bhp and 70 Nm respectively. The high revving and howling V12 was mated to a paddle-shift, six-speed Hewland gearbox.

Responsible for the design were stylist Joe Wong and CAD specialist Jakub Jodlowksi. Together they penned one of the most extreme bodies fitted on a road car. Not only does the bodywork literally invoke intense emotion it also works particularly well as the car produces 1,350 kg of downforce at 300 km/h. Like the chassis, the body is crafted in carbon-fibre composites and helps keep the weight down to just 1,250 kg.

Following several teaser videos of prototypes testing, the Intensa Emozione made its public debut at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was announced that production is limited to just 10 examples and the first two were delivered to their respective customers in the second half of 2019. The car has also formed the basis for the DeTomaso P72 launched in the summer of 2019.
