Based on the 993-generation 911, the new Carrera RS was introduced in 1995 and produced in small numbers for little over a year. It is considered the ultimate air-cooled and naturally aspirated Porsche 911 road car.

As the name suggests, power comes from a 3.8-litre version of the air-cooled flat-six. Known internally as the M64/20, it featured a slightly larger bore than the 3.6 litre engine used for the rest of the 993 range. Equipped with Variocam variable valve timing and Bosch Motronic engine management, the M64/20 was good for 300 hp at 6,500 rpm. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it was mounted in a lightened, reinforced and widened 911 shell.

The wide shell was used to clear the massive three-piece wheels and tyres. Among the visual changes were small winglets on the front corners and a distinct rear wing. The suspension was also modified and lowered. A front strut-brace was fitted as were adjustable roll-bars on both ends. Additional welding meant that the shell was considerably stiffer but thanks to several weight saving measures, it was also 100 kg lighter than the Carrera 2 road car.

In addition to the 'RS 3.8' road car, Porsche also produced a more hardcore Clubsport version. Ready for use on the track, the Clubsport was lighter still and also featured six-point harnesses and a complete roll-cage. It was also fitted with a cut-off switch and a fire extinguisher. It could be easily distinguished through its more comprehensive rear wing.

Although strictly homologation specials, Porsche produced well over 1,000 and 200 examples of the Carrera RS 3.8 and Clubsport versions respectively. They formed the basis for the hugely successful 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 and remain among the most accomplished Porsche road cars.
